Queen Victoria
« on: May 25, 2008, 10:54:10 »

What a beautiful lady she is, the newest Cunard liner. She's in my city today, Stavanger, I believe she just arrived from Southampton starting on a cruise along the Norwegian coast. Great start, the weather is beautiful too.

I thought she's an exact copy of Queen Mary 2, but the Victoria looks different and smaller, correct me if I'm wrong.

As a ship enthusiast I'm lucky to live in this city, 100 cruise liners expected this summer. But I'd be even more lucky if I lived in Bergen..

I think QV is a bit disappointing compared to QE2 abd QM2. Still looks nice though :)

The QV is more of a Cruise ship, what with her boxy hull design, but she is lovely all the same :)

Well she's big enough alright, she occupies the entire harbor where they usually berth the liners, so did the QM2. QV can't be much shorter but looks like she got fewer decks compared to the QM2.

Queen Victoria is very different to Queen Mary 2. The latter is designed and built to be a true ocean liner built to withstand North Atlantic weather and power through the toughest seas to deliver scheduled transatlantic crossings. Queen Victoria is a cruise ship, and a design derived from a 'Vista' class vessel. She actually has some design features akin to Ocean Star in SS (for example look at the stern). Both QM2 and Queen Victoria have azimuth pods, very useful for turning QM2 slowly 180 degrees within the fjord at Flam!

These two Queens will provide different functions for Cunard. It will be interesting to see how the anticipated Queen Elizabeth will look and feel.

Looks like the new QE will be about same size as the QV, some 90,000 tonnes. According to the voyage planner on their homepage the QV will sail to New York next summer, and the QM2 will sail to Norway :)
