What ever happened to one-word ship names?
« on: April 29, 2008, 15:04:02 »

What happened to names like Lusitania, Aquitania, Maritania, Olympic, Titanic, Britannic, or Oceanic? Now all there is is three- or four-word names like Pride of Hawaii, Freedom of the Seas, or Independence of the Seas! What happened?

There are still many 1 worded ships around, and 2+ words are fine, it just depends on what the owner likes.

I guess ship names are like a fashion

Indeed it is. You can see more and more "fancy blingbling" names here in Europe on inland-ships too.   :-\

Personally, i like the one-word-names. The 2+ word names have something....well, i don't know...pimp? Just ain't my cup of tee.

greetings,
Yes,it starts with the owners of the vessels.Take for example Maersk or Msc,they put that infront of the name.
however,if you look to,when something happens with the vessel, they overpaint it as soon as possible.

Grinn.. well.. that Victus was taken from the newspaper.. as it plowed into a summerhouse in the north of Holland.. i peddled there crossing the canal as my best friend's family had booked a summerhouse for a week on the other shore.

One-word ships do still exist.  For example, P&O Cruises operate the following six cruise ships:

  • Arcadia
  • Artemis
  • Aurora
  • Oceana
  • Oriana
  • Ventura
