Can you use 2 ships in the Free Play mode, or is this just for missions?

You can, if one of them are deployable from the ship you pick.

You mean the Container Crane-Crane and the Life Raft?

In SS 2008 you can only use one vessel at a time in free roaming. To have more than one vessel it is very easy to make a basic mission with two (or more) vessels in a particular environment.

You are right Traddles .Only in Ship Simulator Extremes you can deploy deployable ships like lifeboats.
