Chatbox on the forum
« on: April 06, 2008, 12:36:28 »

Hi all,

I'm working for a team on another forum and we have a chatbox on the top of the forum, it's realy practical to leave an info about our work, or about problems, and exchange quickly. We can also diffuse a message to the team without having to create a new topic or post.

It may be a good idea to implement that on this forum if obviously it is possible  :P

Please vote and share your opinions.

Greetings

Budbud.

In fact this system of small chatbox is useful for temporary or instantanous messages between members, that don't need to be archived. It prevents the forum from becoming bigger and bigger and congested by redundant posts. The messages are kept displayed over 2 or 3 days and are progressively deleted in order.

For exemple, about the crash of the servers this afternoon, somebody who wants to check his system is not in fault, could send a message on the chatbox like "is it me or the servers are down?"
This message doesn't need to be archived as it is a temporary question.

the chat box that only gets used the by the only 3 active members on the forum? out of 20 members..

and ive noticed that you mention alot of sso on lots of topic, you've mentioned it once already in your promotion topic.. isn't that not enough?

Sorry if i seem to be a bit harsh, but thats my opinion ;) and sorry for going off topic.

Here is my take on it.

Would it be useful?  It could be a helpful tool if used properly by a fair amount of users.  However, I've seen this on other forums I frequent, and it typically seems to get overtaken by a couple of young ones (you know the type.. 12-15, not really matured yet, use it for unimportant things, etc) and anything that was of importance there is washed away, since I see it being.. say 20 lines of chat, unless it would have EVERYTHING in X amount of time.  Either way, I would see it being abused more often than not, so I'm of the inclination to say good idea, but would need some parameters to be used properly.
