Demo version
« on: February 09, 2008, 20:30:59 »

Hi
I have just downloaded the demo version and would like to know if I can use one othe two "wheel controllers I have.
I have Flight Simulator 2004 and use a CH Yoke and Live for Speed car race game and have a logitech wheel and pedals.
I really don't want to learn to use the mouse just to evaluatethe game.
The game looks great appart from the controller problem.
Thakns

Hi geezerman,
Actually, the mouse is not that difficult to learn to use. One moves it over the surface of the desk or mouse pad to cause the mouse pointer (the arrow) to move across the computer screen.
There are two or more buttons on the mouse that you can press to accomplish certain tasks in the program.  If you obtained a mouse recently, it should also have a wheel which you can turn to scroll a page of text, or to zoom a view in and out.

The full version of the simulator allows you to use various joysticks and game controllers, but I don’t know if the demo does. In any case, unless you have first learned the basics of using the controls with the mouse or the keyboard, you might find it difficult to interface any controller in a meaningful way.

There are many posts on this forum on the subject of using game controllers, but most are on boards not accessible until you have registered a valid license key.

Regards,
Marty

Hi David Geezerman.

Joking aside, Marty is right. The mouse actually isn't involved very much in the game.

I have a number of different controllers (Saitek pads, Logitech Joysticks and so on) which I can use on the game. These are set up via the Options/Controls menu, but I find the keyboard works best, far and away.

Agreed, same for me.  I only use the mouse for rotating cameras and such, most vessel control is done via the keyboard ;)

David,
Seriously, although the smaller boats can be driven like bumper-cars using the left & right keys with short taps, true steering of large vessels such as Titanic is best done by turning the wheel with the mouse. If you click on the wheel and drag the mouse away from the center, you can work with a large diameter circle and set the rudder angle to within a degree. You can also return the wheel to amidships rapidly by double clicking the hub of the wheel.
Probably very few users ever acquire, or attempt to acquire, skill in accurately steering Titanic, or other large ships, with any precision.
If, for example, a mission requires you to make a turn in dense fog at a rudder angle of 12 degrees, you might find it difficult to do other than with the mouse.
Good luck,
Marty
