'Economy of scale'
« on: June 25, 2007, 15:37:06 »

Perhaps it would be nice to upgrade the 'economy' system?

One might need to take a look at the game 'ports of call' for example?

For me it would be a nice touch that I can put my ship in for repairs at a dock, equip with more economic and powerfull engines; in other words upgrade the ship? Maybe even to elongate the vessel (for more cargo tonnage) like the Stena ferries? All at significant (simulated) cost off course.

But maybe I want to play Ports of Call with the sim part up to ShipSim standard...  :-\

Yeah, maybe one day.  Sounds like a good idea.

'Economy of scale'

This term refers to the advantage to produce s.th. in bigger quantity to drive the costs per unit to a low level. In the order to ships this means to take advantage out of building a big vessel instead of a small vessel. These big vessels with lower costs per slot cascade the small vessels. This trend appeared in the 80's with the barrier of the Suez Canal where tanker operators had built cape size ships instead of suez max.

;) Just for your information and improvement

I agree it would add a certain 'spice to the game'. The ship alternative to the pits. love it! :)

I think Vstep might care about the economy of the sim...

I think you don't get the point.

I do care about economy of the sim, but not in the sim.(like ports of call)

I don't care about the economy, I just like sailing ships realistic.

To many (most??) of us, that means that the ship acts in a realistic manner and responds realistically to the controls.

The ancilliary factors (who is paying for the cargo, what IMO requirements the ship must meet, eg) are for someone else in some other game. Not that that is a bad game, but it is NOT the same thing as a ship simulator!

Cheers,
Michael

I personally beleive that such a thing does have a place in a Ship Simulator.  After all, ships sail for a reason.

As it is, Vstep plan to add dock cranes into SS08, which you can use to load up the cargo on your ship.  This is not a part of the realistic controlling of ships, it's an addition to the over all gameplay, just like speedline's suggestion would be.

Sorry, Sam. Misunderstood. We agree on this point :) I have made this point before and I agree 100% with you.
