Lucy:
I agree with you that having Terry’s picture on the forum is just too gross. :)
As for the rest of your prattle, give it up. No one here is quite as ignorant as you seem to assume they are.
Unfortunately, you remind us of a paranoid schizophrenic who once lurked here.

Some of us actually have a modicum of grey matter inside our heads, so don't worry yourself about us Lusitania. Anyway Fred's picture would scare anyone off, do you not think so? :o ;)

You don't know the half of it, Angus!!  ;D

I wonder though, how much email from hags celebrities would get.. after all they have their pictures on millions of websites and everyone knows their name.. yet surely, they have computers.. and internet.. I know this for a fact, I once emailed with one and sometimes chat with a few pretty famous Rock stars from a band whose name I shall not mention for security reasons.  :P

Btw lusitania.. Since when did these old Spambot become such a menace on the net?  ;D

A bit of advice. Don't listen to people who haven't got a clue about the internet. Have you got any idea how many people have their picture on the web? Do you think a HACK gives a heck about what you look like?

My advice, go to the library and read a bit about it. And those emails you refer too, they are very well known. It's just a form of scam that everyone else seems to know about but you. These just belong in the bin without a second glance, danger averted!

Regards,
Fred

My names Jon. How is putting that there dangerous?
But whatever makes you feel safe I guess...  ::)

Scaremongering if you ask me.

There are about 10000000 forums out there. a hag can only bug 1 at a time.
So untrue. Things called "Robots" and "Loggers" are out there to get the information they really want. One email sent out as spam, ending up on thousands of computers? Thats 1000's of people they can get info on at once. THATS whats dangerous, the spyware landing on your computer and you not knowing that your forum passwords and internet banking passwords are being logged, they look out for recognisable numbers and structures, such as credit card numbers.

I really wouldnt worry about a picture / name on a forum

TerryRussel.

If you have given your name on this forum, as you may have found out, its fine, but giving your PICTURE on a WEBSITE is simply out of order. Very out of order. I recommend you delete it. No matter how many boxed internet security stuff you have on your shelf. I got some stupid e-mail yesterday from a hag myself, saying that he offerd to deliver a cheque of 1 million pounds and needed my full name, adress, and picture. One thing is certain. I like in the UK. and he may be in America. he didn't even ask me what COUNTRY i was in. Even in internet safety cd cases (my pet Norton one for instance,) say that you should NOT post any picture or adress online. Even, to stay really safe, not your name. Which this topic is about. If you want to see the maunual yourself. I am welcome to send you a copy of the picture.

Oh well, if you want to share your profile on the internet and be as danjorus as you want, be so. I cant "command you" All I am doing is helping you.

Regards
Lusitania

I've had my photo on the internet ever since the internet started as such (mine was the 5th ever web site). Apart from people throwing darts at it, no problem has ever come of it.

I also receive the "get rich quick" garbage. Before the internet, they were sent by post. Nothing changes. But you can look my name and address up in the UK electoral register. Downside of a democracy, perhaps.

As you say, you can't command me. Sorry, I don't listen to people who propogate ill-founded scare-mongering. You haven't offered one shred of evidence that anything you say is correct. Show me one piece of evidence ("proof") that simply having my name at the end of a forum posting will get a virus on my computer, or else stop this here and now, please.

Of course, the other thing is that although my name is written at the end of each and every post, it's obviously too complex for Lucy-Lu to spell it correctly. Somehow, I'm not too worried.

And Mvsmith, "Lusitania" was a cunard liner which had no relation ship with a "cap'in" of the "titanic at all" allthough Lusitania did sink one day...

I got an email about it from the New York Times.

Hi Lusitania,

I don't mean to be picky or what not but look at the below quote.

I have seen many posts ending with "Regards. (name)" I have no Idea if you acctually know, but just this sentence could get a virus inserted into your computer.

Right ok, so finishing a post with regards (name) can give viruses, yet even though you disagree with members using Regards to finish their post you've pretty much finished all your posts with Regards. How do we know your not giving us a virus?!

You said you wonder why no one has stopped this or policed this well as you can see neally everyone finishes with Regards, (name) even you

Honestly I don't mean to be picky but if you are going to complain about something I think you shouldn't go and do what you disapprove of.

Bon Voyage,

Lighthouse

The “greetings” virus is the worst of all, far more dangerous than the “regards” virus. For one thing, coming as it does at the beginning of the post, it has more time to do its evil work.
In addition to corrupting your hard drive, it is known to grow hair on your palms unless you wear gloves while you type.
My Dad, who is a hazardous biological waste disposal engineer, and knows all about viruses, told me to always line my shoes with aluminium foil to prevent getting WIFI viruses.
No need to thank me for this valuable service.

While we're on the subject, it could be of interest to alert you all to the smurf-virus that is smurfing around.
It changes every smurf to the word smurf in your smurfs, thus making your smurfs unreadable..
Unless of course you have a good smurf installed, and keep it up-smurfed. Then you have nothing to smurf about..Remember: it's better to be smurf than smurf.. ;)

By the smurf, I forgot to smurf that it is also smurf to have a good Fire-smurf on your smurf, to smurf unwanted smurf onto your smurf..

greetings and regards.. ;)

Reading this post reminds me the end of the 18th century, when people were afraid by the crazy speed that could reach a very new technology, called trains : 30 km/h !!!

Some people thaught that reaching such high speed would be very bad for human body ...

Well, let's talk seriously. A first name, even a name and first name, and even a personnal photograpy, will never, absolutly never introduce any sort of a risk.

There's NO WAY this can be possible. Nobody will guess your CB card number thanks to your name or photography. Nobody will be able to take control of your personnal computer, or to steal money from your account, or to kidnapp your wife, or to make some part of your anatomy become ridiculously small, just because he knows your name or has a picture of you. No more on an internet forum than in the street.

Please stop propagate stupid rumours ... That won't help anybody. You have nothing to gain by doing that, all you do is raising paranoia.

I'm not saying internet is totally secure, far from that. But your name, first name, and picture cannot in any way be used against you.

I'm not telling my personnal advice. I'm talking about facts, beeing (when I'm not on the commands of a virtual ship ...) a specialist of IT security.

Regards,
Denis
