New ships??
« on: January 24, 2008, 12:14:29 »

Why does it take so long time to make some new ships here you can download? With Flight Simulator there is new plains/patches you can download all the time >:(

It is because it takes exactly as long as it takes to learn to do a search before posting...  ;) As long as people keeps posting without doing just a minimum of reseach, no add-ons will be released...  :P

Did you do a search?  ;D The latest statement on the subscription service is still to be found in the FAQ and announcement section...  ;) Altough the October deadline is exceeded I haven't heard that the plans are dropped.

That is because Microsoft does not make them, players do. And 95% of the addons are totally worthless and the dynamics are so far off you cannot call it anyway near realistic flight models. So although it might 'look nice' it's actually rubbish.

I must have downloaded 2000 planes for flightsim and all I have ended up with is 20 or 30 good ones, of which 10 are spot on. So that's not very good is it, when you look at it that way?

With this sim, VSTEP wants to keep control of the content, so that will mean that you get better addons. Of course members can have their creations in the game if they make really good ships, but only in cooperation with the developers, and only if the dynamics side is relatively plausible too, people tend to forget that there's much much more to it than just a pretty model.

I have too put my opinion in this. I do agree about the quality with add-on for flight simulator. But I also think it is wrong of a moderator in this forum to use it as an argument as long as the quality of shipsim is as bad as it is today . But i have to say that i find it more disturbing with the bad quality there are with the ships as are in the Shipsim 2008. I do not find any single ship as behave close to real ship shipsbehaviour. I really hope that VSTEP start to put some more energy on the ships dynamics before they do anything else. I have been working with ships and ship simulators for many years and i feel that this software is more a platform for displaying good looking ship than it is a simulator. I will continue to support this products but there really needs to be a big different in the ship dynamics quality.  And if you look at flight simulator the airplanes are those as have been made by other than Microsoft for example project open sky or ifdg and these are actually free. I don’t have any problems to pay for a good product but then I expect a lot better quality than VSTEP and offer today. I really hope next update will make big improvement for the ship behaviour because there is no need for any other ship as long as the old ones don’t work. And anther thing as have to be changed is that with the joysticks so you can use them when you for example are on the bridge wing.

Think about it. The keys that you use to move yourself to the bridge wings and up and down laddrs and so on are the same as the keys that you would use for controlling the vessel. How do you propose to do that?

As for "Not like a real ship", I agree I can't feel the wind in my face and I don't get waterlogged in the game. But it's a SIMULATION! I have a couple of medium sized vessels of my own. ShipSim is a reasonable approximation. I believe that some of the UK Ferry companies also believe that, as they use it as part of their training...

ShipSim has less bugs than TrainSim ever did, even after TrainSim's updates by the mighty Microsoft. ALL simulations will have bugs. ALL software will have bugs. It's a fact of life. Live with it. But stop griping, eh?  ::)

One has nothing to do with another. However bad you may think SS08 is, you would agree that you would not want addons in it that are WORSE, right? (I don't share your opinion about SS though)  That was the point. The state of MOST of the addons available for FS.

And as for comparing SS with FS, I think it would be best if we wait until VSTEP has been in the business as long as MS with their FS, and then compare the quality.

The ships in this second shipsim version are much better than the early planes in the second FS version. And the quality is also much better than the vessels in the closest 'competitor'. And at a very good price. And you surely cannot compare this to high end maritime training programs that cost thousands of euros.

Dynamics wise I can't tell if they are very close to the real thing, as I have never had the controls of most of the ships in the game. You have a nautical background and think it's not near the real thing, but other people with a nautical background seem to think it's pretty close and really good value for money. So I cannot comment on that.

But that's a bit irrelevant anyway. We were talking about user made addons. Most people that make them for FS have never flown the plane they made either. And most ARE rubbish. Sure there are really good ones. And free ones. Made by people that know what they're doing, in cooperation with real pilots and instructors. These are great addons. And worth paying for too! But most are simply not and are nothing more then a nice model with zero realism in dynamics. And most poorly made ones crash the game, give all kinds of problems, etc.

That's all I am saying, we don't want addons that do not meet the standards, do we? however you may feel about this standard. Maybe you think the quality is bad. I disagree, but you are of course entitled to you own opinion. So surely - as I said -  you too, would not want anything that's worse in it?

And the best ones DO find their way in the game. But the creators work together with VSTEP. There will be 'user made addons' but just not in the typical way that other sims might have. And I for one think this is much better and will keep the rubbish away.

I can agree with a lot of what you are writing it is was no compline about the software it self it was that i feel the develepor group puts to mutch engery on wrong this. I totaly agree that you geat a great software for the value but i think it would sale alot better if the develer group but some more angery to look like how real boats reackt. I mena for example the ship doesn ot even care bout the wind but on a real shrip there would be affacted alot. Anter thing is the rate of trun a real ship increase reate of turn all the time as you have an angel on the rudder and does not stop on one rate. And a ship defeinatly dotn stop turning when you out the rudders midship. I mean this is so basic thing as the develeper gropus has took care of. I Acttully have to say the last version off ss06 hade better ship dynamis than ss08. I dont try to tell this as negative critics and i dont want any rubish in the sofare. I can pay 10 or 100 euros for a great ship but i think it is importman that the ships have the basic dynamics.

Hi Mattug,
We all would like perfect ship dynamics, but it is not that easy to do within the time constraints and resources available. The deficiencies are recognized by VSTEP and are discussed at length here on the forum. In particular, that wind does not act directly upon the ships is well known, and is one reason there are no player sailboats or sailing ships.
Wind does affect the sea state and, indirectly the ships. You can see this in the way ships will fall off in a quartering sea.
We can expect constant improvement in this respect, but there are many other things that the developers have on their plate. There is also the problem that many users have computers that are barely up to the task of handling the simulator as it is. The added computational burden of advanced dynamics may preclude them from enjoying the sim.

Marty
