Real life ship simulators
« on: June 01, 2007, 22:18:45 »

I was talking to a pilot today, and he mentioned that he sometimes was sent to this place in Poland to train his skills further in big model-ships that was big enough for him to sit on board. I.E. a 300.000 ton tanker was around 4-5 meters long....FUN!!!  8)

Which lead me to my questions:
Does anyone have more info on these models?
Is it possible for us common people to sail for an hour or two?
If so, is it very expensive?

And are there other places where it's possible for us to try a professional sim?

Real-life ship simulators are advanced training platforms designed specifically for ships deck officers (engineers have their own engine simulator)!  Bridge simulators are engineered to realistically recreate the experience of being on a ships bridge and usually come with a gentle vibration effect to represent the engines rumbling away.

I am currently not a deck officer but hoping to start training as one next year - maritime colleges use these simulators on a regular basis.  Having gone to one of the college's open days earlier in the year I was highly impressed by the system and it's realism.

It is unlikely that the general public would be able to access such simulators - however they are usually open at maritime college open days.

EDIT: On the issue of sitting on "ships" in a lake, this (http://www.warsashacademy.co.uk/course-details-training-facilities.asp#13) should help.

Impressive photos. I am hoping to build my own simulator, not to such great lengths, but utilizing this software, an array of monitors, custom built consoles with replacted controls, etc.
