Funny you should say that saltydog. When I was last at sea the cadets on the ship called ME Gonzo the Great because I have quite a large hooter (nose).

Apparently, according to Wikepedia, Marmet was named after The Marmet Coal Company who mined in that place. Of course it was a cover up, they were actually mining Marmite and sending it down to the sea for export to UK. You can see the towboats and Marmite barges in the view I sent earlier.

I like your story Traddles, but I heard a different tale about the origin of Marmite.
Some time ago, somewhere in the last century, there was a guy named James Brown.
He lived in a small town in England. In his neighbourhood also lived two beautifull sisters: Heather and Mar
One day James plucked up enough courage to ask Heather if she would go steady with him.
She supposedly answered him: "No, I won't be your girlfriend, but Mar might"...

Indeed Mar did, and James went on to invent this wonderfull product, and named it after the momentous words of Heather..

I liked that story very much, it reminded me of my Mother, years & years ago, when I was a small boy. If I misbehaved to her annoyance she would say:- "Marmite smack you if you don't behave properly." She was a very special person, only died last year at the age of 105. It was odd to be orphaned at the age of 71!!

I think she was actually, we did get the occasional Marmite butty when we were children!!

And Captain Davies, thanks for your reply. At 105 my Mother was ready to go and had been begging to be released for a long time. So in a way it was more a time to rejoice in a life well spent than to be sad.
