Seriously, I have jars that are several years old. I've never known one to go off. Not sure how you'd tell, anyway!

Yeast extract. Very concentrated. Very strong taste.

You spread it on bread or toast, thinly.

It is crammed full of vitamin B and other useful things. Good for us diabetics! No calories.

OK my friend, nearly the same we haw here called Malt ekstrakt (Yeast extract), and they use it in making of beer to and taste horrible on bread

I read all 20 pages of this thread. You guys piqued my interest so I ordered some Marmite from Amazon.com. Just got an e-mail from them saying it has shipped. Now I'm anxiously awaiting the delivery cause I'm sure I'm going to love it. Unless I hate it.

Wonderful on bread. Spread a little butter or good quality margerine (I use Benecol), then a thin smear of Marmite on top.

Stupendous on toast! Same method.

But people either love it or hate it. There seems to be no middle ground. In fact the makers have a series of adverts with people either flocking to eat samples or running screaming from an attractive lady holding a plate of sandwiches.

The delicate flavour of Earl Grey goes down well with a Marmite buttie. Milk, but definitely no sugar.

I'm not a Marmite virgin anymore! Just tried some on buttered toast and it's really quite good. It tastes like a somewhat salty brown gravy on toast only not as thick or soggy.

Yes I did actually. I like sopping up gravy and meat juices with bread so it's right up my alley even though it's vegetable and not meat it tasts similar. Washed it down with a cup of T&H Yorkshire tea, black because I don't care for warm milk or sweet unless it's hot coco, and I seem to have survived unscathed.
