Queen Mary was considered a more homely ship I think. I read the Elizabeth had darker colours and stuff.

I dont like american ocean liners. They are too bland unlike the lavish european liners.

That rivalry doesnt need

to be recreated, I think. It ended with the war, when Normandie was seized by the US, who renamed her to "La Fayette" and then burned

her in NY through carelessness. Less dramatic than a shipwreck at sea, it is still a very unhappy and not so glorious

fate, reminding of some hostile and enduring feelings between allied people.
It is only 50 years later that a ship from Brittany Ferries received the same name, and on their site you will read "Named after the French region of the same name..." without

any reference to her predecessor, and that, although the name of La Fayette has been used by France and/or the US for naval vessels since WWII.
But of course the "paquebot" (packet boat

..) is a fantastic achievement, as a design and as a mechanical piece of art: steam/electrical propulsion...
My English being what it is, what does "bland"

mean in relation to ships? Is it "soft"? Do you mean "Nordic design", or "Ikea", or "Scandinavian style" vs "kitsch", "1900" or "Victorian" .... I know not much (euphÃ©misme) of design.

"bland" means "smooth", "lacking character," "not distinctive." W/ reference to food, for example, it means something like "needs more salt."

I think this is a preference for Victorian design over the more "modern" (50s) design of something like the SS United States. That is a debate where there is no winning: "de gustibus non est disputandem".

Thanks Michael, I was not that far... I too prefer cosier furniture than hard seats, and I agree that a Fifth Element interior, Ã la Mickey of the Disney Magic, or a Victorian one (if such a thing still exists) can appeal more than the Formica style, even for a ship.
The France had also such an industrial design interior, although it was regarded as brilliant.
The interior design of an ocean liner is indeed another factor of approach.

The queen mary and normandie wernt done in the victorian design, they were done in art deco. All european liners after the SS ile de france were done in that style until the launch of the SS France in the 1960's.

Thanks to these explanations, I know a bit more over interior design styles, particularly that it is an intricate matter: streamline modern, modern, Art Deco,...
Perhaps do you know how the style of the pre-WWI, the 1900's is called? Golden Age?
And that of the interior of the SS United States? In these years, we said in French that it was "design". A variation from Art Deco of the 20s.
The meaning was somewhat pejorative, it reminded of poor quality fiberboard, cheap laminate, thin aluminium, uncomfortable seats, bad looking colors.
Laudative too: trendy, modern, light, easy to replace, american... (happy days)
Is there name for it? Industrial style?

But maybe there should be an add-on pack for diffrent Lines. One for Cunard, French, Italian, etc. That way people could have the boats they want and more. Or to make it easier on people buying them
