VHF Radios - Any advice
« on: May 19, 2014, 20:30:08 »

Hi all,

I'm looking for a cheap VHF radio that can pick up marine (and possibly aviation) radio. I have decided to get one after sitting next a guy on Saturday in Southampton who was picking up all the calls, he could hear everythng that was going on.

Can anyone give me adivce on manufacturer, models, etc?

Best I can say is that a standard marine VHF won't pick up aviation radio, I have one which I use on our RIB and haven't had any problems with but no point recommending it as it is £90. Unless you class that as cheap.  ;)

I would definitely get an icom. I have both the IC-M72 and IC-M73, the newest one records the last 30 seconds all the time so if you hear a call you can repeat it. The battery life is exceptional. I have used Standard Horizon radios in the past and they are rubbish.

Happy Shopping

Edit- Try finding a used version of these as I see your price range, new they are a tad expensive but the lifespan is very good!
