« on: September 30, 2007, 01:02:37 »

Hi everone, again.

Today I'll be presenting you with my second boat I've created in sketchup. I've seen varies requests on the forum for someone to make it so I went ahead and did it. I present to you today, 'Water Fox' a motor boat with an outboard motor!

THE SPECIFICATIONS

Length: 5.23 meters / 17.15 Feet
Width: 1.88 meters / 6.16 Feet
Draft: 1.14 meters / 3.76 Feet
Height: 1.28 meters / 4.21 Feet
Engine: 2-stroke 50 HP
Top speed: 22 Knots
Tonnage: 1.25 Tons

All comments welcome, both productive and negitive critisim. You may even like leave a request if you like or PM me your request.

Okay see ya then and keep an eye out for my next boat, however it wouldn't be called a boat more like a micro-ship... oh I've said too much (Ha, Ha)

More pics to come.

Bon Voyage,

Lighthouse

Well, it's a start.

But generally, ships are more curvy. The bow of your ship is like 4 polygons, while most of the ships we have now have bows that run in the 100's or even 1000's of polygons.

And generally, we'd like to see (way) more detail overall. Think of rims, edges, windshield whipers and so on and so on. Also keep in mind we are doing a ship-sim, so think of mooring points (usually little metal things on ships that small), places to hold the navigational lights, rudder-blades, I could go on forever.

And I think you used Sketchup? That's not really a great program to model ships with, it's nice for some simple buildings, but for ships, you need something a little more high-end.

And not to discourage you, but after eventually you get something done in a more detailed way, you only half-way there. You'd also like to do a low-detail one for in the distance, collision objects, seperate alpha objects etc. etc. It's quite a process.

In any case, good luck developing this further :).

Hi Martijn,

Well I guess you've got to be a little cruel to make progress. Like I said in my origional post, this is only my second ship I've designed.

I am currently working on another two projects and yes, I have taken your advice on adding detail, detail and detail! I'll be adding such things as windshield whipers, nav. lights, mooring points, bow thrusters and etc.

I'm still currently working with Sketchup 6 through I am in the process of downloading 3D Studio Max, will this program produce the high quaility designs you seek?

With the projects I'm working on now I'm taking your advice and also developing the objects after collisions small and large. Though could I ask, what are alpha objects?? I might add them to my ships in the process of development.

Well thanks for taking the time to reply, through alittle discouraging I must admite, was what I was waiting for... A reply to improve my designs, many thanks Martijn!

Bon Voyage,

Lighthouse.

Greetings,
Yes,it's a good start.Atleast you try something out.
You say it's your 2th model you try in sketch-up.Like Martijn said, this sketch-up program is good to make some buildings.
If you want to try 3-D studio max, afther just creating 2 models, well you will find out, that a challenge.
Goax75,can maybe help you to start in that program, because it's not easy.
Anyway, good luck with your try-out in modelling
Regards
Marc

Nice!

I agree, round off bow a bit more. I find using the arc tool for bows good.

the boat could do with HEAVY detailing, like this ship, which ,in another post, is unamed for now,but on 1-10 scale in detail:4-5 in detail. yuors is  kind of....1-3ish,but you do better helms   than me! would be nice for a better bow, though
but good for your 2nd boat.

With due respect Shipfan, if you look there is actually a good amount of detail on Lighthouse's boat.

Nice Bow!

very good job with the waterfox lighthouse ;).sketchup is a very good modle makeing tool (if you know how to use it). i made this ship in 8 hours with sketchup.

p.s  dont care what they think about your boat. what matters the most is that it looks good to you :) my first and secound boat wernt that good. but try messing around with the tools and get the feeling of what needs to be done and you can be better than them  ;)
