Hard to believe but we still have this steam powered train in service in India. It takes people to a hill station called Darjeeling and is fondly know as the "Toy Train"

That train is featured in one of the train books I have:  two men sitting in front & strew sand on the rails for the wheels to not skid.

The double deck rail carriage was first operated in Britain. A Bulleid design. Although having seen one in a museum it certainly isn't to the same modern standard as the Indian one shown.

ISTR that under Indian law (I don't know of Pakistan and Bangladesh) but there was not supposed to be any charge for passengers travelling on the roof anyway.

Given the price of worst great western here, I might perhaps ask them if I can travel cheaper if I sit on the roof (just forget the low roof clearance of the IKB tunnel!)

To get back on to the topic ......

We have a train in India called the 'Palace on Wheels'. It's more for wealthy tourists and it travels to places of historical interest.

Wwo! At those prices maybe it IS run by first group capital connect!

I like the bar on the train. A good Indian friend of mine showed me one of the greatest things to come from India, vin sun.... Kingfisher lager ;) (although he DID try to kill me with a rather spicey herb before hand!)

I think the bartender heard you ! We have a wide choice, sir ....  ;D

A good Indian friend of mine showed me one of the greatest things to come from India, vin sun.... Kingfisher lager ;)

Possibly the most popular beer in India. Sells better than Fosters, Bud, Carlsberg .....
