Portsmouth Approach Channel Speed Limit
« on: June 09, 2011, 21:54:29 »

Hi Guys, I was looking at the buoy positions on Solent AIS, when I cam across a picture of 2 Buoy - I foiund a better one which states a speed limit of 10 knots

Does this mean that the Portsmouth approach channel is limited to 10 knots? is thiis all traffic

you can see the position of the No. 2 Buoy here:

http://www.ais-live.co.uk/aismap/AIS%20Maps/solent.html

Also, how would this affect the IoW ferries/hovercraft? When would they be able be able to speed up?

Many Thanks

Hi TFM,

There is a strong possibility that speed requirements would have been indicated on the navigational charts and in publications (Sailing Directions) covering that area. If vessels were under pilotage, then they would be certainly aware of the speed restrictions. Honestly speaking, it would be rather difficult to sight that notice regarding speed  on the buoy. Needless to say, it will never be seen in the night !  ;D

Some reference material:- (but I have not read all of it  )

http://www.portsmouth-port.co.uk/pmsc/pm21006.htm (a particular line in this link says - Once a vessel has reached a position of within 0.5nm of the shore a speed limit of 10kn comes into force.)
