There was an emergency with an old Dover-Calais hovercraft and they deflated the skirt- that brought its speed down quickly. I imagine that did a fair bit of damage to both the hull and the passengers though!
Anyone know if thats a normal emergency procedure or whether that was a result of some other problem?

Wouldn't that also shred, or even rip the skirt off of the craft?
If you were to jump out of a fast moving boat and hit the water... ouch!
Water can still do a lot of damage if you hit it fast enough... Remember that the English Channel isn't always that smooth.

I was on a baja boat (which is a high-performance speed boat) and I decided to stand up after being told not to... Bad idea.
Just to answer any questions:
Water Skiing: 25 - 45 MPH/40 - 72 KPH (Feels like hitting...water)
Baja Boat 75 - 85 MPH/120 - 136 KPH (Feels like hitting concrete)
