Greetings all, well from my experience on cruise ships as 4th Engineer, if your not on watch you can go ashore but you just have to watch the beer :D, as for the social side of things cruise ships can be fun as there are so many people onboard. As someone has already mentioned i too prefer the cargo ships as an engineer anyway :D...

I've heard that,unless you have a title of Officer,you can socialise with passengers,if you are from the deck-crew,you are not allowed to do that.
I dont know for sure,thats why i ask it,never been on big cruise-vessels,not as a passenger or crew.
Dont know how the rules are onboard a vessel like that?

by the holland america line is are even the apprentice officers allowed to socialize with passengers and even hosting a table in the dining room. But maybe it's different with other companies
