Can you control a tugboat?
« on: October 27, 2010, 18:29:13 »

Hello, I am 17 and a senior in highschool and I want to go to Maine Maritime Academy to become a tugboat captain and get a job with Portland Tugboat Company. I was excited to try ship simulator with the hope I would be able to control a tugboat and learn some things, however it sounds like you cant.. is this true?

Can you control a tugboat?  Is there a different game where you can?

thanks,

:-\

For sure you can control a tug boat in SSE! One of the most powerful tugs in Hamburg, the "Bugsier 2", driven by two azimuth thrusters made by Rolls-Royce is available. Unfortunately the Russian tug, known from SS08 isn't in the game anymore.

Here's a nice model of the Bugsier, she has two azimuth thrusters in front as you see..
The Sherpa is a regular stern drive Anchor handling tug..

Great model of an older tug with twin Schottel-Rudder-Propellor. This type isn't that powerful, but very good in handling!

Now I know that English may not be your first language SaltyDog, but to describe 2 Tugs as "several" is stretching it a bit too far.  Unless of couse you have some inside information that is not yet in the pubic domain.

Aah, I see "several" means more than two..
As we only have two tugs, several seems not fitting..
Thanks for the correction.. ;)

Hello kkende,
go to youtube.com and search for "Schiffsimulator Bugsier". Then you can see how to handle the Bugsier in the Game.

@kkende

Not sure how it is in the USA but tugboat operators in the United Kingdom usually require a fair bit of sea time before they consider training you for tugboat skippering.

Try and get some deep sea hours in first either on oil tankers, LNG carrriers, bulk etc. before going for tugs.  Being a tug skipper is an interesting career, some of the new high performance tugs (voith & aquamaster Z-drive) are works of art.

Seriously, slide show anyone ;D

10 FPS = a rather awful gaming experience.

Strangely enough "Herkules Atlas" is a tug in the full sense of the word. So several is quite correct, and English is my first language. :police:

That is a hair well and truely split and a straw firmly cluched.  But as we are being pedantic... Tug=Pull and pull is the opersite of Push.  8)

On the inland waters of the US, the vessels that push large strings or lash-ups of barges are towboats.
They are only called push boats by shore dwelling pedants.

In New York harbor, when I was paying my tuition by dodging the hawser, we spent about as much time pushing as pulling. Which would you choose to describe towing on the hip?
