how can I get more
« on: August 20, 2010, 15:57:00 »

I have a windows xp 2002 version , a service pack 3 , AMD Athlon 64 processor 3700+ , 2.19 GHz , and 1.93 GB of Ram I dont know where to look for the graphics card at maybe someone could tell me where to look . Anyway I know its below the minimum standard according to shipsim.com but if I could add more or get every thing I need I want the quality of the video on shipsim .com under trailers and demos and its the 2 video . Will the minimum requirments on ship sim .com equal that quality of the video

Hi there bman0501,

If I misunderstand your question then please correct me.

If you would like high quality graphics then you will have to spend quite a lot on a decent graphics card. However the first thing to do is determine what type of card your system can support.

Judging by your processor you may have a AGP graphics card slot, but I do not know what motherboard you have.

To help us find out what type of computer you have, could you please post your DXDIAG report? You can find this by following the instructions below...

1. Go to start, and click on 'Run'.

2. When the run box appears, type in 'dxdiag' into the box and click 'Ok'.

3. If a message appears click 'Yes' and a window will open giving you information about your computer.

4. To get a copy of your report click the button that says 'Save all information...'. Save the file to your desktop.

5. Attach this text file to your next post and we will be able to see information about your computer to help.

Hope that helps,
Adam

Hi there,

It appears you have an onboard graphics chip, which unfortunately won't be powerful enough to run ship simulator properly.

Having done some research on your PC in question it seems you are able to purchase a graphics card and install it into the computer.

You will need to purchase a graphics card though so if you can give me a budget I can suggest a card for you :)

Hope that helps,
Adam

Hi there,

You won't be able to get a decent graphics card in that price bracket I'm afraid. Unfortunately graphics cards can be quite expensive if you want something that is of high quality (such as the video you mentioned above).

I have a found a graphics card for you (see below) but it's not going to run Ship Simulator with everything turned up :(

Also make sure the power supply is big enough to handle a new graphics card
And one more thing is that new graphics card have become very large so it might be smart to check if your cabinet can fit the new card.

He means the graphics settings in the game if you set everything to max many graphics card will struggle.
So you would have to set the settings to medium or low to play the game with that graphics card.

I mean the settings ingame, if you spend about $75 on a graphics card you won't be able to get high quality graphics by turning all the settings up.

I will have a look for a better graphics card, but I warn you to get a decent one you will have to spend quite a bit more.

If you look at the requirements (http://www.shipsim.com/products/shipsimulatorextremes) you would need at least GeForce 8800 GT or Radeon 4850.
However I think you need to go up to Radeon HD 5670 to run SSE smooth, I'm still quite sure even this card wouldn't  run the game in high settings especially if you use high resolution on your screen.  http://www.amazon.com/XFX-Radeon-DisplayPort-PCI-Express-HD567XYNFC/dp/tech-data/B0034K3ANM/ref=de_a_smtd
I think I would spend at least 150$ on a new graphics card, the card I have installed in my computer costs about 440$http://www.amazon.com/Sapphire-Vapor-X-DisplayPort-PCI-Express-100281VX-2SR/dp/B0031XIGG8/ref=sr_1_1?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1282323125&sr=1-1 but you don't really need to use this much money to get SSE running.
Maybe you could look at some used graphics card,I'm sure its possible to save some money there. But you would probably not get any guarantee with a used card unless there is some special law where you live.
Maybe someone else now more about the GeForce cards?

Well I have a GeForce GTX 260 and it runs SS08 smoothly. This card cost me about £150 so it would be roughly $300 I assume.

I would if possible spend in the region of about $250-$350 on a graphics card. If you managed to spend something like that, you would be able to turn quite a few high quality settings on.

I picked up my GeForce 9500 GT (1 GB memory) for PCIe slots from www.tigerdirect.com for about $50 US, and it runs very smoothly.  SS2008 looks like a movie, FSX is very smooth, and RailSimulator I get in the neighborhood of 90 FPS.  For the price, it's a great card.  I did improve my power supply to handle it...I installed a 500W supply, and it runs everything very smoothly.  I only have 3 GB of ram onboard.

It's a fan cooled processor, but the fan is nearly silent....not loud at all.

Good luck on your search.

Well your processor is similar to my own, and sometimes ship sim struggles a tiny bit, but I cannot tell you what it will be like with SSE :)

You have a old computer like me, but upgrading the graphics should let you play SSE providing your power supply is up to the job.
