Ah, the newest ferries of P&O!

Thx for sharing them with us, TFK.  :)

Anyone any good with photoshop and then we can show these two barges as what they will look like in 20 years time- assuming they last that long- sitting on the beaches of alang?

My issue isn't with the ships themselves- the yard that built them is a very good one. My issue is with their future and... well let us just say if I were to put my comments about the professional standards of some ferry operators then I dare say a goderator would delete this post on the grounds it may offend some employees at that once great flag carrier ferry operation.

Indeed, my prediction is that certain new ferries- which may or may not be the two in question- will soon be handed over to a new operator.

My experiences with "some ferry operators" in the Irish Sea has actually been quite positive in terms of the way that they maintain the ships, while these ships are indeed well built by a good yard they are (like all modern ships) designed for a finite lifespan.

While they may well end up on the beach at Alang within the next 20 years it will be a case of sensible economics rather than mismanagement, I wouldn't expect to see a different logo on the funnel any time soon.

Clanky, I've recently learned that you are an experienced maritime engineer so I would dare not question your knowledge of ship design or management.

I would firstly just make clear (since we all know which barge operator I'm referring to) that my questioning their method of operation is NOT relating to the safe operation of their vessels. They quite rightly have a good safety record.

My concern is their commercial ability. I am not at all impressed with their current CEO who I regard as lacklustre, weak, lacking vision and basically boring. Too many industries think consolidation is the sole way to go; it is not. consolidation will buy you time to recover a business, but it's not something you should rely on forever.

Take for example them finishing western channel routes- all taken over by competitors that are doing quite nicely on that now. Indeed, when they saw competition on the Cherbourg route, the other lot were ready (I believe) to finish, only for this lot to announce they were finishing themselves... They won a commercial war and then- handed it all over.

I think that 'this ferry company' has put too much faith in just two vessels. They are basing their future on freight trade- right at the wrong time. Personally I believe that this lot are likely to be sold off in a merger with another company.

Perhaps someone will buy out this lot and another ailing barge operator based in Calais and turn it into one profitable operator???

Ahhh right, in that case I can see where you are coming from, but to be honest the competition is also fairly poor, when you look at the other operators the price competition is making what were once routes which could be operated at reasonable rates unprofitable and non-viable, this is especially so in the channel where the competition form the channel tunnel is huge in terms of passenger numbers and with freight rates being at their lowest for years many companies are struggling.

LD's attempts at starting a Dover / Boulogne Service failed despite fairly competent management (although the lack of reliability of the vessels which they chartered didn't help them much), ultimately there are too many dogs fighting over too few scraps in the channel so they are all operating at the limits of profitability.

Then there's the eu- and its tunnel friendly/anti shipping attitude.

I hate the eu with an absolute passion for what it is doing to prevent trade with our neighbours in Europe. Careful Clanky or we'll have a tunnel under the Bay of Biscay and rail transport only- soon you'll only be able to travel by train methinks.

Is it their new flagship for Portsmouth?

The time is ripe!
MS Azura is now on her way from Southampton to Rotterdam.
She arrives at the Wilhelminapier somewhere around 10 o' clock in the morning where I shall see her dock.

Also the weather is told to be very good tomorrow;
10C to 15C in the morning and 26C at noon!  ;D

I also just hope it will be a cloudless and rainless day, but the ironic thing is that it hasn't literally rained for weeks now, which is very rare in Holland.  :P
But it's only good for my photos.  ;)

VS i'm waiting for your foto's ;)

I needed a bit of time to sort the right pictures out.  :P

But anyways, as promised:

The new cruise season has started again!
And the starter of the cruise season came on one very warm and windless day:

The MS Azura!  ;D

Enjoy the pictures.  :)

Re: Ship Spotters Topic (Cruise ships in Dubrovnik)
« Reply #599 on: April 25, 2011, 16:43:19 »

In the next days I will post some pictures of my last Ship Spotting holiday in Dubrovnik, Croatia here.
Copyright of all photos is by me, you can also find them on my website.

Here you can see the beautiful old town of Dubrovnik, which is one of the most visited cruise destinations in south europe.

The first ship was the Zenith from Pullmantur Cruises, which visited the port on April the 20th 2011
I took the pictures from the house beach of my hotel and in the habour.

Enjoy them!

Kind Regards,

Joey
