If you mean without a marine qualification then yes there are weight limits as well, so long as it is used for the sport or pleasure of the owner and not for financial gain then anything under 80GT doesn't require a marine qualification, if it is over 24m and under 3000GT than it is also exempt, if it is over 24m and over 3000GT then you need to be qualified to operate it.

So, in theroy, I could buy a small sized cargo vessel of around 50mtrs and be AOK with sailing it around the UK... (as a yatch, obviously) That seems like a accident waiting to happen

From what I understood, no you cannot buy a cargo vessel, nor a 50 meter ship.

A cargo ship, whatever the size, woud be considered 'for financial gain'. So you would need an appropriate certification.

And since your cargo ship would be over 24 meters (and most probably over 3000GT!), you cannot buy/use it without the appropriate certification.

Can anymore confirm this?

IF you bought a commercial vessel then converted it to a "exploration yatch" (which basically means you make it like a yatch, but it keeps its looks) and operate it as your personal craft then its classed as a yatch, not being operated for commercial gain...

Ok, i've figured it out. Basicaly, anything under 24 mtrs and 80GT you don't need to meet any regs in terms of qaulifications, but anything over 24 mtrs but under 3000 you need to meet crewing req's for engineering and deck. I think?

It still won't respect the restrictions.

Over 24M and 30000GT, you need the certification. Otherwise you cannot own and operate your ship.

In your case, a 50M cargo vessel will most probably has tonnage over 3000. That means you will need a certification.
