Resume? on downloading very large patches/updates.
« on: August 02, 2007, 22:34:41 »

shipsim seems to be geared towards very large patches or updates unfortunately.
This make it a bit "tricky", on dial up.
What will be the approximate maximum size of the update for 2008 due Septmeber I think.
Is there a "resume" to download in stages.
I think 150 megs was mentioned and would prefer spreading that amount over a fey days (if I buy version 2008).
Alternatively can the patch itself be split by Shipsim into say 2 sections.
Perhaps  one for repairs to the program and one for new functions/content.

Hiya and welcome to the forums :)

You could always try a Download Manager.  I always found GetRight to be a good one when I was on dial-up ;)

Edit: Terrible grammar ::)

Downloading is OK as usually use Filezilla which picks up each time where iit leaves off.
Just depends how large VSTEP intend making the patches/updates and if it has the resume function.
If they keep getting larger they would not be worthwhile for my my interests.

Thanks

Ah, I see.  It must be late, I thought you were having issues downloading (DJM needs more sleep ::)).  At the moment, there are no details on patch size, but I'm sure we will be updated as soon as this information becomes available ;)

Regards.

Hello Stu I read your pm and maybe very useful.
I sent a pm but not sure if 2 copies went out or none. Probbaly none.
Could be a month or 2 before I get shipsim 2008 and perhaps could email you later.

Email (seem to get lost on pm) if further discussion/help for Blender, etc.

Have you finished that boat yet ;)

Thanks

GetRight is a very good DL manager. It fetched ShipSim 2008 (~640 MB) via dial-up in 40 hours including a few line drops and a 3-hour general power outage. For power outage, it helps to have a UPS so you can shut down gracefully.

Downloademall in conjunction with Firefox/Mozilla for resumed downloads.
Graphics card collapsed and had to format harddrive so until I get a new computer which I have ordered.
there may be a few spelling errors as can only see half a clear screen.

Barry

P.S. Incidentally the Blender content making tutorials on my site.
Make a boat from half a line, etc.

Thanks Stu

Time I get new computer in about fortnight and try and get programs to run with Vista etc could be a while then may get shipsim if I see it in PC world, etc.

If trying/testing your boat in VS, it exports OK from Blender as direct.X with texture, and align with the Y axis not X axis with keel on y axis and  funnel facing outwards.
Will also install into the VS demo.

err... textures? I haven't got that far yet  :-[

multiples of 16, i.e 256,512. bmp or tga.
open uv image editor bottom window.load texture.
Object use key F (uv face select)  then a for all.
Right click on each window to make active (I think).
slect by Right click on face to texture.
Alt plus Z to put texture on.

Alternatively press key U mouse over object window & depending on what view you are in put on actual shape of object.

Experiment on a cube.

I wonder if a moderator will delete this as off thread topic ;)

Thanks Barry.

Yes, we're a bit off topic but not substantially and opening a new thread for a small side discussion just clutters up the board. ;)

Outch.. 40 hours, I feel sorry for all people that doesn't have access to broad band (640 mb < 10 min  ;) )

There are many broad band solutions available and some doesn't need a cable stretched over some mountains.
Some are probably very expensive. But I don't want to see a small minority of 56K modem users are going to decide the file size of each patch for this game. :P

There is a majority of us who got broadband, and I guess you need to have a very interesting reason for not having it. I'm sure the reasons are many...  8)

I don't want to call them large. I will call them time-expensive. And who wants to spend 3 hours in front of a PC  and wait for a completed download? Probably nobody in this "rock-around-the-clock-world" will do that because they got 1000 of things to do within a day. ;D

Oh man.....so much to complain about in this world :P

I don't think Barry or anyone else was trying to dictate anything at all. Just enquiring whether or not he'd be able to download it. Surely asking the question BEFORE is a sensible way to go?

There are many people around the world still on 56k remember, but I agree- patch sizes must be determined by whats in them, rather than download time.

I only got broadband 7 months ago...

If you live inside the UK, I'd happily send the patch to you via CD, might be quicker than downloading it.

Orinoco thanks for post and for your kind offer.
Have been in discussion with Stuart and he mentioned he could send one if necessary but may give shipsim a miss, and just carry on making satellite sceneries and content for the Stentec sail simulators which is my main interest.
