Yacht Renovation
« on: June 12, 2009, 02:51:53 »

Hey all,

I am interested if there are any individuals or groups on this forum that know a thing or two about renovating old beat-up Yachts.  A few friends and myself were thinking about aquiring a local yacht for sale at a great price and fixing it up for our yacht club.  Other than some scratches and mildew on this boat it is in entirely working order.  I personally know nothing about yacht repair other that what I have gathered while working on my bowrider.

I was hoping that some one on this forum of boat lovers could set us on track in refitting this yacht.

Thanks in advance,
   Nick C.

My dad has done a lot of work over the years to boats, he might be able to give advice. I'll PM you!

I hope you know how to work with wood and fiberglass, that's probably quite important.

That's just about all I know how to work with, because of my other boat.

Sure you can ask. ;)

I was going to wait on putting the add up until I saw that I was going to get some helpful advice.  I personally think that the yacht is a total junker, but you never know what can happen with a club of boat lovers and a little bit of elbow grease.

I can see that that could become a dream boat, but how about electrics, you know what condition electrics and engines are in?

I know nothing about the electrical systems but I do know that the engines are in "OK" condition. I was not promised that they will run first time but I was told that they will run.

I was thinking about driving up next week to take a look at it for myself.

I'm not a fan of sailing boats, but I love restoring motor vessels. From time to time, I visit the boat auctions near here and get odds and ends. A couple of years ago, I went to see if a suitable anchor might come up, or any other miscellaneous items. In the end, I came back with a barnacle encrusted 22 foot boat, with obviously junk engine and transmission etc. It cost me about 800 pounds in the auction.

My son and I spent a year working on it and got it working wonderfully. We fitted new engine and Z drives. We changed the fuel tanks. We rewired the boat and fitted new sounder, radio and GPS unit. We fitted new covers and lots of other stuff. We ripped out the flooring and laid new planking. We fitted new seats, fore and aft. Varnish became a part of life...

We antifouled the hull and recoated the top-deck.

Then we went out in it.  :2thumbs:

You may have seen it in my Youtube videos last year, when we went racing up and down the Solent in it. That restoration took a huge amount of time and cost a great deal of money. But we enjoyed every minute of it.

Basically, you need a vessel where the hull is sound. Almost everything else can be fixed. But a bad hull will always be a worry.

I'm thinking of going to take a look at this yachts hull for myself, but from what information I could gather from the seller the hull is in good condition.  All it needs is some new Paint.

Thanks for being a part of this Terry, it's nice to hear from some one with some work under his belt. ;)

How many times have I heard that one before? NO boat ever meeds just that. Even after a few weeks, boats need all sorts of things.

It depends on how much restoration you plan to do. As I say, I sometimes just start with a hull, having stripped almost everything else off the vessel.

But, if you want one with only a bit of repainting, check the following:

(1)
If it has covers, how well do the clips and zips and poppers work? Is the cover OK or is the stitching coming undone. Are there any areas which have become weak?

Covers have a limited life, depending on the amount of sun and salt that they get. Brittleness is your enemy, as is corrosion.

(2)
If the hull is wooden, have it checked by someone who understands wooden hulls.

If the hull is GPRS, have it checked by someone who understands GPRS hulls.

If the hull is steel, have it checked by someone who understands steel hulls.

(3)
If electrics are "not your thing", get them checked. Likely problems will be some ancient, barely working generator that is poorly fixed and waiting for its tenth disaster that year.

(4)
Do all the hatchways, doors, cupboards, etc work properly? All catches functioning?

(5)
The list is endless, really, but insist on a sea trial. Or make sure you pay very little for it. Right now, it's a buyer's market.

I know what it takes just to maintain a small boat, I meant that the Hull just needs some new Paint.

Hopefully, my evilness will help you avoid a hull that isn't worth the effort. Sad as it may seem, sometimes boats have to curl up and die.

Very posative there Terry

Naaa, I understand what you mean. Sometimes it just get's to the stage where boats aren't worth it anymore. Especially in today's world, you won't get back what you'll spend on a boat now.

I've been to look at some over the years where my foot went through the planking. At that stage, repairing the boat would mean burning it and replacing with a new boat. Those ones are probably the ones to avoid...

Well Terry, your comments will be either proven to be paranoid or a true gem on Monday.

Myself and the rest of the clubs founding members will be traveling upstate to take a look at the boat.  I am perfectly ready to start the search for a new boat and forget about the holes in the hull that I saw.  On the other hand I am also ready to take on this project boat.  I had a telephone meeting with the other club members and we are ready to steam ahead. ;D

Probably wouldn't be worth the insurance money either then

These are what I had in mind.

Not even sure if they would burn very well.

Ok, So I just called a sales person at Boats of Boston to get their hours and see if I could find out a little bit more about the boat before I drove up to it.

Salesman:  Boats o' Boston

Me:  Yes, Hello I'm calling in regards to one of your used boats.

Salesman:  Which one might that be?

Me:  The 31 foot Jersey Flybridge

Salesman:  You won't believe it, I'm standing on that boat right now.

Me:  Alright?

Salesman:  What is it with this boat!  Can I call you back later?

  End of conversation

"Would you buy a used boat from this man?"

Picture: Saleman, bored out of his mind due to lack of sales and lack of buyers. Sat leaning back in his chair, feet on the table, wishing, hoping, praying that someone, anyone will ring.

Ring-g-g-g-g
