QuestViewer.exe error in SS08 Demo
« on: May 10, 2009, 20:30:53 »

Hello all,

I'm considering to buy the ShipSim 2008, so first I want to try the ShipSim08 Demo.

Installation goes well, but when starting the mission, I get a white screen, and an error about QuestViewer.exe.

Quote
QuestViewer.exe has encountered a problem and needs to close.  We are sorry for the inconvenience.

As attachment I have uploaded my DxDiag-txt-file.

Does anyone know why I get this error, and -more important- how to fix this problem?!

Thanks!

That mostly happens when it might not have enough room. SS08 is 2 GB for Vista, and 1GB for XP. You might not have enough room for it. Happened to me with the full version along with New Horizons on my family Vista, It said the same thing. So I nw use my grandmas Vista Home Premium which bearly closes Ship Simulator 2008. So I just put it on another computer and all is fine. But I don't know how it will work out for you.
And Welcome to the Ship Simulator index and official Forum.

Hello,

Thankyou for your reply.

What do you mean by "enough room"?  Do you mean my memory, or my harddisk?
(I have 2GB RAM memory, and 54GB free space on my harddisk.)

Hi, PluralisMajestatis.

Your system has
  • enough RAM
  • a fast enough processor
  • enough space on your hard drive
  • a good enough video card
  • up to date video drivers

But, the DXdiag does report some problems:
Registry Errors Found:
Key 'HKCR\Microsoft.DirectMusicScriptAutoImpAudioPathConfig\CurVer' is missing
.

Also:

Display Tab 1: The file nv4_disp.dll is not digitally signed, which means that it has not been tested by Microsoft's Windows Hardware Quality Labs (WHQL).  You may be able to get a WHQL logo'd driver from the hardware manufacturer.
Sound Tab 1: The file ALCXWDM.SYS is not digitally signed, which means that it has not been tested by Microsoft's Windows Hardware Quality Labs (WHQL).  You may be able to get a WHQL logo'd driver from the hardware manufacturer.
Music Tab: Problems were found in the system registry.  Details are available in the saved text file
.

These aren't anything caused by Ship Simulator, but could well be the things that make it crash. I don't know what would have caused this problem. Possibly some program has corrupted that section of the registry.

Try uninstalling Ship Simulator completely and then restart your PC and try installing it again.

Hey Terry,

Thankyou for your reply.

I've uninstalled en re-installed the newest drivers for video and sound.
Altough NVidia claims they have WHQL-drivers, my Windows XP still reports that my GeForce 6200 hasn't passed the WHQL-tests.

Further I've uninstalled and re-installed Ship Simulator, however, the problem stays the same.

I'm out of ideas, unfortunately..

I think that the "music tab" error may be the cause of your problem. I've been searching the Microsoft Technical Library, but it is strangely silent about this error.

I'll keep looking and post back here when/if I can find out the cause.

Thank you.

I've uploaded the 'Event properties' of the error, maybe it's usefull.

Best regards.
