Import
« on: April 06, 2009, 20:05:51 »

Hiya :)

Sorry if this is the wrong place, however it isn't really about SS so i thought it was better here.

I was just wondering if it is possible to import or somehow get Sketchup models into Blender? I've been looking at all the export options, and saw I could export to 3Ds or an X file, which would be great to get my ships in VS, however I need to get it from SU lol.

Thanks in advance!

I haven't tried it yet, but supposedly the freeware program 3DRAD could help there, I saw something about that on the VS forum.

Worth checking out perhaps;

Hi Shipaddict,
I’ve never bothered with SU, but the place to look would be over in Development corner. That is where the SU folks hang out. The subject has probably been discussed there.

I think we just crossed paths. I moved it to the VDG board.  :)

Been there done that...and it was invisible in VS lol :P

Thanks anyway though Fred :)

Hmm....  I read that more people had that problem with the invisibility. Did you invert all the faces?  I think some people use this succesful, might be a matter of the correct settings and export properties and such.

And no problem!.  :)

I reversed all the faces so they weren't blue, what's the difference between reversing and inverting then?

Hmm, i'll have a look at the setttings, thanks :)

There is another way to import it, without 3drad and it wont give you that blue face error. You can export your model as a Google Earth 4, and import it as a collada in Blender, please note, you must have python installed or it wont work. This method will even import colors and textures! I know a lot about Blender, feel free to ask me! :)

Unfortuantely the Blender method just hasn't worked.

So I had a play with 3DRad and it finally got in to VS!

Just some minor bugs, including the fact that it goes at 33kn and is like a speed boat lol

So you actually only need 3drad VS and Su to get a ship in VS? If so I'm gonna try myself.

Seems so :)

Be warned, my ship is very small not to scale and the VS lot said that the size is in the X file and I don't have the foggiest how to change it lol

Sorry to knock up such an old thread but SA, make sure that when you exported your .skp as a .3ds, or .x, whatever one you did, make sure that your ships are correctly scaled, meaning that if you were to place a person on it, he wouldn't be bigger than the boat like on some SU models. Also, if it is correct, try to get a real idea of how big it appears to be in VS (for example, if it was half the size it is supposed to be) you would scale the real model to times, it also helps if you made a CFG for it. In the CFG, you can tell VS about how you want your ship to behave, for example, engine power, turning dynamics, etc. I don't really make CFGs, Jack would know more than I do. I had the same exact problems as you did, my ship was WAY too tiny, and my ship which was meant to be 600Ft long, ended up being barely 6Ft long, and just as yours, traveled way to fast, so fast, that if I put it on highest speed, the ship's bulb would be sticking WAY high out of the water. :P
Hopefully that answered any of your questions. :)

Hey Shane :)

No problem at all :)

I tried importing into Blender and it looked rubbish lol. I think it is when you extract the .dae file from the zip of the kml and change it to .3ds. It doesn't include textures and messes up the model :(

Weird, it works for me! Anyway, I guess that 3dRad will have to work...

Lol scale was wrong with 3D rad :P
Then make it bigger in Sketchup and re-export it.
