Hi Tom,
This has been discussed many times. The short answer is that there is no water in SS 2008, only a surface.

Yes, I have, I have got them! and love them ;D

Thinking about it though it would probably slow the game down if they had to model under water, prehap it would be better if they stuck to what they know works ;D

I don't know about that, mvsmith.  I've sunk ships with the cheat in free roam and you can go right under the surface of the ocean when the vessel is sunk.  I can see the ship going down to the bottom and it looks all wavely.

Hmmmm, I don't know if I'd feel comfortable having submarines floating around underneath the surface, it poses some risk on Multiplayer, and, there isn't actually an "under water" mode in the game, its not Modelled (Is that the right word?). But even so, It would be quite interesting!

It means that there's "no water" under the water surface in SS, got it?  If you'll compare 4 different ship games SS, Virtual Skipper, Silent Hunter & Virtual Sailor - you'll see that only the last 2 of them "has" water under the water surface

Do you have the same problem in the bath?

I think for Ship Simulator 2010, they can use the dangerous waters underwater view remastered for Ship Simulator.

Except that they would have to get permission, and the source code for all of that and get it to work with quest viewer. It would be easier to just stick with Ship Simulator

I mean look at some vids of the underwater view and try to make it to be Ship Sim design. I said this is because I own Dangerous Waters and Ship Simulator 2008+Ship Simulator 2008 New Horizons. But I could dream of that
