I really hate seeing her doomed to that fate....

Perhaps they can try raising her piece by piece?

I know they once raised a large hull section. It bent under its own weight as they lifted it!

I think they shouldn't raise it at all, nor one more piece of her.. or go back for expeditions and go down there. There's enough footage now and stuff in the museum, I think they should leave the gravesite alone, to be honest.  :-\

What would they do with it after raising it? It is in four large pieces. The aft section is collapsed because it was not pressure equalized—there was air trapped in it.
It is a gravesite. Would you want to raise the Arizona?

I would like to see the wreck in person, because when watching it on TV or in pictures, I can't quite get the feeling that it's real, or that 1,523 people really lost their lives....

Which is worse: raising a grave site and preserving it, or having it perminantly dissapear off the face of the earth?

Just leave the ship were it is.
Like Fred said:There is enough footage and pieces all over the world.
If  they had the idea of raising her,the raising itself would not be the hardest task to do.When the metal would come now afther 95 years on the bottom of the ocean, into an oxygenical enviroment. The metal would in a matter of houres, complete crumble to dust.
And why would you preserve it.
It's a tombe for about 1500 people.
Just let it rest.

To be very honest, the former is worse.

Everything dissapears off the face of the Earth anyway, sooner or later. There will probably not be a bone left in her, the sea would have claimed all of it by now, so it's not even a real tomb anymore at this point, but it's more about the principle of the thing to me. A grave is a grave and stays a grave, and should be left alone.  :-\

Plus, you can go see stuff from her in the museum. And perhaps even touch some of it.. You don't need what's on the bottom to know and feel that it really happened, I reckon. You can trust the footage, that wreck is quite real.  ;)

I agree with everyone else, its a mass grave for people who lost their lives. Doesn't really respect them raising it in my opinon  :-\

I find it a bit chilling to see footage of something that hasn't seen daylight for 95 years, and something that holds or use to hold so many bodies of those who lost their lives in the disaster.

I really agree - RMSG - the first one is worse.

As Fred said, everything dissapears.

The titanics wreck has survived more then an average life span of a man - so it will die again, just like you and me.

Gigantic, as I have said before, Titanic is a ship. It deserves no special treatment. We should just let her go.

just think of the wreck as a huge massive gravestone or monument for a lot of dead people - then you will understand how it is inappropriate to salvage

Exactly, It is a bit like taking the steel from the World Trade Center and rebuilding it. You Gigantic, of all people should understand this.

Once a site has been declared a graveyard, taking things from it is grave-robbing. In most countries, grave-robbing is a very serious ofence. In some, it is a capital offence (that is, punishable by death). Taking sections of Titanic, or trinkets, souvenirs and so on is a disgusting way to behave.

The WTC by comparison is not a grave, as the bodies were removed. It was a crime scene, which is somewhat different. For that reason, there is no objection to using materials from the WTC site for agreed purposes.

I really don't know what the fascination with the Titanic is, she is just another ship wreck isn't she? just leave her as she is, ofcourse she will disappear soon and be lost forever but hey, life is dukkha.

But there are always things that will be there like the Bronze propellers and all that brass stuff. But even then, raising it would be wrong. Looking at it in our little subs isn't.

On my visit to the Titanic Museum in Branson, Missouri, I saw plenty. I saw a replica of her center propeller, some life jackets, and even a model of the wreck. I still can't get that feeling, though, unless I dove down 12,460 feet at 41° 43′ 55″ N, 49° 56′ 45″ W and saw her with my own eyes, and when I pay the $40,000 for the dive, it would most certainly be worth while to see more than just the telemotor and proplellers.

On another note, it's also difficult to imagine her size without seeing her first hand.

Well, I think you still wont get a real feel from the wreckage, about the true size either, as it is in bits, and can never give anyone the same feel again from when it was still afloat.

Plus, you can only see a certain spot of the wreck at the time.. it's picth black darkness at those depths, you can only see about as much as you see in the footage, anyway. Sure up close you can better judge the size.. but you'll not feel the size of her as a whole, I think.

You just have to train your imagination a bit I reckon.. cause walking around on her in Shipsim, is pretty much one of the best ways to get a feel for scale, from a human's eyepoint. Where else can you find a better virtual titanic to walk around on?  The real thing is gone, models are all that could give you a feeling of her being in one piece.

Get a multi-monitor setup, turn down the lights, and sit close to the screen, and get a track-IR..  that's cheaper than a dive to the wreckage.. hehe

Hi.

I think you should realise that no-one is going to raise the darn wreck just because a boy wanted to understand how big it is.

When you die, would you be happy in the world of the dead is someone raised your gravestone and robbed some of the stuff in your grave? What would happen, would you say "Thanks mate! can you take a few more?". if those grave robbers raised 1500 of your belongings, would you be happy?

I think not. I dont exactly think any of the Titanics deceased passengers would either.

As firestar said, you should understand this with simple common sence. Which you are proving not to have.

PS: The steel of the WTC is used to make one or two US navy vessels.

Gigantic, as Fred has said, you only get to see bits of the wreck at a time. Thats all you ever will. However, I can't disagree with your want to go and see her for real.

I suppose, Fred. That, or get together $400,000,000 and rebuild her as best we can! ;D

Anyone here have hundreds of millions of dollars lying around? :P

THAT is the best way to get a feel of her size, even if it is very unlikely, am I correct? :D ;)

Yes, to build an exact replica would be the closest thing.

But even then, you cannot taste the spirit of the era. It will never be as it was back then, obviously. But yes, that would be the next best thing.

I haven't got that kinda money though..  :)
