I have a question about glasses. as you might know I want to become a captain, but I am not allowed to wear my glasses. So I am forced to do a churgical operation for my eyes  >:( So now my question is if someone can tell me something more about this stupid rule, since there are captains wearing glasses too. so I don't really understand the purpose of this (internationel?)rule.

Hi Maritiem,

Back in the early 70's 1970's you cheeky guys, we had to pass the eye test without specticals (Glasses).  That was the usual reading the letters, colour blind test and the lantern test.  After the eye test in 1970's we did not undergo an eye test again.  If time then reduced our vision, mine only for reading, we had to have two sets of specticles with us at all times when onboard the vessel.  Should a pair break or get lost hence the backup.  A new set of specticles was then ordered from our optician to replace the missing/damaged pair and was flown to the next port at our own expence. 

I am not sure what the regulations are today regarding specticles.

Age and bright sunlight reduces vision rapidly.

Hi Maritiem,

I have the full set of regulations here with me, I'll find them for you, since I wear glasses also. But, there was no mention of having to get any surgery done to my eyes? Maybe the law is different in Sweden.

What kind of glasses do you have Maritiem?

It depends on your glasses (strength) and function (watchkeeping / lookout) on board. I have glasses too, but i can see without them. I only have them, because i get a headach after a while, so for me it's not a problem.

I sailed with a Belgium 3rd officer once, he couldnt pass his medical examination in Belgium because of his glasses, but in the Netherlands he passed the examination without a problem. So maybe it's also depends on the country.

I use my glasses for long distance.

I'm not sure if that's a problem, maybe a set of spare glasses is fine then. Pls check out the goverment site of your country for the requirements of the medical examination.

dont know about the international rule but i know those ones where you go out into the sun and they change to sunglasses i think they were banned because of the pride of bilbao and the oslo incident

I wear glasses, well I don't but I have them and should since I really can't see. My mom has lasic 5 years ago and never thinks twice about it. She can read a flyer from a mile away. But you won't be able to do much but lay in bed with black sunglasses for a couple of days after the surgery.

I believe the IMO made recommandations.

You are Dutch right? Check it with the IVW department then, they can tell you and then you know for sure ;-)

Hi,
   Why are you looking to go so quick into surgery, have you looked into all the options, 2 pairs of glasses, contact lenses.

Your sight deteriates very quickly in bright lights and with age (as said by others). It is not wise to become a captain with the frame of mind, that you can see without your glasses, but you get head aches. Because the concentration of a captian is rather great. I would also say that if you are looking at detailed charts your eyes are going to be constantly refocusing.

Your best bet is to book an optisions appiontment and see what they say,they know your eyes better then anyone else.

If you go to a consultant at a eye surgery clincic they will be looking for costumers that is why I advice you go to your normal optision first.
