Topic: The third Olympic-class ship (Read 4116 times)

Contrary to the impression left by many books on the subject, White Star initially placed orders for only two ships: Olympic and Titanic. Only after Olympic went into service, and after her collision with Hawke, did Ismay order a third ship.

At a ceremony in Lord Pirrieâ€™s office at H&W on 23 October 1911, Ismay signed the order book, hull number 433 was assigned to the ship, and Ismay announced that the name of the ship would be RMS BRITANNIC. At that time, Titanic was still at the fitting-out dock.

The myth that the third ship was originally to be RMS GIGANTIC, and that her name was changed after Titanic sank, is refuted by these facts from the archives of Harland & Wolff.

The H&W archives are held in the Public Records Office of Northern Ireland.
The White Star papers are at the British National Archives.

That the third ship was named RMS BRITANNIC on the day she was ordered, about a month before her keel was laid, and months before Titanic sank is well documented.

Nothing in the archives of either company indicates that the name Gigantic was ever seriously applied to the ship. It was simply a figment of a publicistâ€™s imagination given a life by the press, and used facetiously by people in the shipyard and suppliers.

A careful reading of the article from TRMA cited by rms gigantic supports this by the fact that the only reference they could find was not in the archives of H&W or White Star but a note appended to an order book of the anchor supplier, by an employee of that firm. The reference in the LNWR document follows from the use by Hingleyâ€™s.

If this is an example of what passes for the R in TRMA, Iâ€™m surprised that their Titanic is not the same color as Sherpa.

I have already discussed that article with you and pointed out that an added note using the facetious name proves nothing.

The main concern of TRMA, as the name suggests, is the color of Titanicâ€™s funnels.

I have taken a sample of wikipideas "buff" colour, and then applyed it to my sketchup model of Titanic - since it is the only coloured picture I own. The funnels don't look right - look right at all. I don't think they were buff, even though many edivences suggest so.

Many posters of white star line were found with the picture of a new olympic class ocean liner with "RMS Gigantic" at the top. This was changed not to cause stuff with Titanics sinking.

That's because they weren't generic buff, they were White Star Buff!

The hex triplet code for the color I use, as it is the color Ken Marschell (sp?) uses, is DAA06D.

I just typed in DAA06D in to wikipedia just to see what came up and just for a laugh, and it came up with did you mean David!?!

No, I mean type the code for changing color on this forum, then type in "#daa06d" (without the quotes), and you end up with this color. THIS is White Star Buff. Hex triplet is the html code. It's in base 16. The first two digits is the red concentration in the color, then next two are green, the last two are blue. the higher the value, the more the color.

Meh, all I know is that, speaking of the TRMA, it would be useful for one of the Titanic experts to get an account here, since I seem to be the one that everyone turns to as the representative on the Titanic portion of this forum, but hardly know anything about it compared to those guys! Those guys could identify an image of an A deck prominade looking aft as either Titanic or Olympic in a snap!

Whoever told you needs better, more exact sources. Besides, what are you doing getting info via word of mouth? If they told you that Titanic had a box on the forward port side of the 2nd class staircase that no one knows the use of because it wasn't on Olympic, would you believe them?

If you feel threatened by another just because you didn't happen to think of the nickname you think is rightlyfully yours on the forum, you should not hold that against him...

I can probably dig up quite a few threads where you have stated popular misconceptions as facts.. and where you even reverse youself lateron, when presented with better information by an actual expert or your precious TRMA Gods, which has a few times now appeared to be not so perfect a source either.... they often seem to be disputing the facts amongst themselves too.. So how much does any of us really know?... and is it worth being unpleasant over to another member? I think not....

Newsflash: You're not an expert either, mate. No one is an expert at anything at your age.. you're a keen enthusiast, but to become an expert, you need to put the work in.. it takes decades of research and study to become a true expert.. Not just having an internet connection or acces to a library or a registration on some forum and repeating what others say time and time again, wether you're asked for it or not...

As such, there are others here to which I would turn if I wanted the most reliable information on the subject to be honest..

Sorry to sound that harsh, but if your obsession causes these kinds of remarks and rivalry, then we cannot have it.. simple as that. You cannot insult someone for doing the same thing you do, taking other people's word for things.

Now, let's say that one of you knows how long she is in Winter, and the other in Summer.. and lighten up.

Fred, I never said I was a Titanic expert. I know when people know more on a subject than I do, and I respect that. I don't argue with the dynamics team at Vstep, as you recall from the PM I sent you, and I don't argue with the TRMA trustees about Titanic facts. When an arguement leads to a post that contains more detail than I can understand, I hush up, which is why I don't post in some topics after a period of time.

I never said I was a Titanic expert. I know next nothing compared to the REAL experts (would be nice to get one on this forum to sort some of this out. It would keep me quiet in these sorts of issues), which proves true in any situation.

I should probably apologize. It's just that the screenname "TheTitanicExpert" is like saying "Look at me! I'm the best! No one can point out a single flaw in me!"

P.S.: Titanic really DID have a box on the forward port side of the 2nd class staircase that no one knows the use of because it wasn't on Olympic. We call it the Mystery Box.
