Titanic's steering equipment in SS: coming soon?
« on: November 29, 2008, 07:16:54 »

First the Verandah Café sign, then the open 3rd funnel deckhouse doors, and now this!

I'm sure anyone who has hung around Titanic's docking bridge has seen it: a rectangular prism near the staircase's base.

It never occured to me before, but I had a thought, and looked into it.

I consulted Titanic's general arrangement plans, and sure enough, my idea was right!

That prism is in the very position and orientation as if the docking bridge's staircase's base's door (that's a lot of "'s" ;D) was wide open, and what is behind that door is REALLY exciting!

If you were to open the door, you would find a staircase parallel to, but one deck below, the staircase to the docking bridge. What do these stairs lead to?

Titanic's steering equipment!

Probably the 2nd best thing to her engines! ;D

Isn't finding hints to future additions fun? ;)

Uhm.. I don't get the excitement, really..  ???

And why would that be a hint of an addition..?

It makes it rather likely that it will be added next game.

As for the excitement

IT'LL BE SOMETHING NEW!

P.S.: WOW, you're quick!

 ;D

Well actually, it does nothing for the likelyhood that it would be added, I think.
There's dozens of things we could point out that might 'be an indication that they could expand it'.

I wouldn't get too excited about these things if I were you. 'adding details to the titanic' isn't nearly as high upon the developers list as you may think. Not trying to be negative, but you know.. just realistic.

If the system requirements would allow it, I'm sure they'll update whatever they can, but as it is, Titanic is allready the most demanding thing in the game. I'm sure there's not THAT much room, even in the next one.

But it would be nice if there would be a nice surprise in SS10, though..  ;D

I think you are forgetting something.

The developers don't model Titanic

Jason De Donno does ;D

Jason has no other job at VSTEP than to model Titanic, so, aside from a real job, I doubt he could be THAT busy. (not saying he's a bum, obviously)

Well, I know that, but VSTEP has to keep the system requirements acceptable.

It doesn't matter who makes a model, that's not what I'm on about. The Titanic as it is now, is pretty much the limit for SS08. They even had to downgrade it, I think, to make the game run ok on 'average pc's.

Who makes it doesn't comes into play, the modelers that operate on these levels are all capable of doing that, given enough time. It's what the limit is when you put it into a game, before it makes the requirements too high.

So even if SS10 brings enough 'breathing space' to make the models more detailed, 'bigger', etc.. then I would bet more of that 'breathing space' will be spent on the dynamics side, than the cosmetics side.

Hope you see what I mean. The list I talked about, VSTEP makes that list, not Jason de Donno.  ;)

If Jason were to deliver the FULLY modeled Titanic, inside and out, to the very last rivet, with better, or at least the same quality as it is now, then we couldn't use it in this game yet for a long time.... Sure he can make it, I am convinced of that, but being able to use it in the game, that's the more important part. :)

Well it seems pretty silly to me to have 3 open doors on a ship and only have a big ol' wall there!

The doors on either side of the 3rd funnel deckhouse are open, the door to the steering equipment is open, the Verandah Café's interior walls are rendered, the man even put a sign on it saying it's coming soon! What more do you need to be convinced?

I'm not saying EVERYTHING will be in, but it seems to me that at least the deck chair storage in the 3rd funnel deckhouse, officer's mess hall, Verandah Café, and steering equipment will at least be open. (And that makes it sound like more than it really is!)

This is all very well, but not everyone here is so obsessed with Titanic as you and a couple of others.

Not everyone seems to want to constantly play Titanic. I hardly ever see her in MP.

So RMSGigantic,
Your saying that prism should look like a door and there should be an opening on the other side which is perpendicular to that staircase? I say that could be one way to get to the engine room.

EXACTLY, except if you look at the plans, it does not lead to the engine room at all, but rather to the steering equipment, so it leads to the STEERING engines ;D

Ship Simulator is about controlling a ship and not exploring one.
If it would be about exploring the Titanic, Vstep would have called the game Titanic Simulator...

we explore other ships, too, no?

If it wasn't, we wouldn't have a walk through mode, now would we?

The reason Titanic is so detailed is because it is not  modeled by Vstep.

WAIT WAIT WAIT WAIT WAIT! HOLD UP!
« Reply #20 on: November 30, 2008, 06:24:47 »

Wait a second....

Another thought occured to me to look into.

I thought, "Wait a second, Jason De Donno wants to make Titanic look like how it last did," so I checked the TRMA photo of that part of the ship to see if the door was open.

I then noticed that there was actually no door, but seems to have a similar arrangment to the 2nd class staircase on boat deck, where a wall seems to stop the door.

Dang, and I was so excited, too :'(

Yeps, a café in the Titanic is very handy, indeed.

No, it's not, actually. I think it's useless could be better taken away so my PC runs better when I sail with the Titanic.

The reason Titanic is so detailed is because it is not  modeled by Vstep.

Walkthrough mode isn't meant for walking through the whole ship exploring every single room of it. Like Mad_Fred said in another thread (or was it this one? Sorry, just woke up..) that if the Titanic gets any more detailed, no one's PC could even be able to run it...

I'm not trying to be offensive.. :)

I think it was this topic indeed, Chantal.  ;D

And you are indeed right, even though it's nice to walk around on a ship (at first) to see to what extend it is modelled, the walkthrough mode is mostly there for us to get an extra pair of eyes on things that we need an eye on, when we manoeuvre the ships.

I know that some people here are totally obsessed with the Titanic, and that is fine, we all have hobbies, and we all have things we adore. But keep in mind, all the little details that people in this age worhsip from a nostalgic viewpoint, were actually not that special when the ship was still around.

In other words, people back then were impressed with this ship, for sure. But with lots and lots of other ships too, before and since. And yet, the 'buffs' nowadays, are way more impressed then those people back then ever were. They cherish things that were never cherished or thought of as special, by the people who actually knew the vessel.

Purely mondain and everyday ship details suddenly become 'nuggets of invaluable information'. And this is rather silly, I think. The people that were actually there saw her as a beautiful ship, the 'greatest' at the time even perhaps, specially since they deamed her unsinkable, the latest greatest thing..., but remember, there is always a 'next best one' after that, and one after that, and one after that. And in this case she wasn't actually that great after all. Poorly designed and even outdated from day one. Because they advertised it as the greatest, unsinkable, etc, vessel to draw customers, didn't really make it so.

But people tend to hold on to the special cases, in this case it's a disaster that spawned a 'famous ship'.

But if she never had sunk and was taken out of the running after having served her purpose for some years, then would these people have become obsessed too? NOPE! So when we apply logic to it, that means, that purely as a ship, she's not that special after all, doesn't it. The disaster created that. So if the ship is not that special without the disaster, her details aren't either.

So from the view of  'non titanic obsessed developers', upgrading her and thus sacrificing pc power that could be used on dynamics, weather, waves system, etc, would not be a priority at all.'

Again, I don't say that it's bad to be really into something, have at it! But I just want to put it in perspective a bit. Since the Titanic draws many people to the sim, she will probably be upgraded at some point, but I would bet that this will ONLY happen, if they have something to spare, AFTER they upgrade the things that are actually important in the sim. They will focus on actually sailing the vessels, not on walking around going 'ooh' and 'aah'.

PC power permitting, we might see changes, but not as much as the buffs would like to see, I suspect.

But Fred,
Titanic isn’t complete without a fully modeled space for storing deck chairs!
