My New RC Tug Boat!

Hi everyone!

While I was away, lots of things happened, including this. I bought a new RC Ocean Going Fire Fighting Tug.

As most of you may know, I am into RC boating, or as I call it, model boating. So while I was away, I bought this (Virtually Brand New) Tug Boat, I went to the boat show that comes on every year, went to my RC clubs stand, and saw this tug, I said "I've never seen that tug on the lake, who owns her?" One of the lads replied (Carl) "I think she is for sale if I am not mistaken, Bob's selling her, Fred originally built her" (Bob and Fred are people in my RC boating club) So I had a look at her, talked to Bob about her (he's a genuine bloke) and he let me have her for £400, believe it or not, way off what she would fetch on E-Bay, he was originally asking £500 for her, but since I was a friend, he said I could have her for £400.

So, on the next fine day, I took her out onto the lake, and she sails wonderfully.

She has Bow Thrusters, full working lights, a horn (I laughed when he said that), A 4 channel radio, which allows me to control: Rudder, Throttle, bow thrusters, horn. She runs on a 6v system, with two lead acid 6V batteries (which powers everything). She is an amazing Tug. I actually know the person who built her too, I know him well! but never knew about this tug he had built. He has built many fantastic models and has been doing it since he was a child. Bob bought the tug from Fred, and he just left it under a sheet so it wouldn't get dirty, and never used her, he's more into sail, rather than power. But either way, I brought the tug out onto the lake, and lots of people were looking at her when she was going past. Great stuff.

p.s. sorry about me blabbering on, just me, very chatty hehe I also forgot to mention that this is a scratch built model (apart from the hull) I'll post pics of her earlier development later!

Believe it or not, she was actually ocean going too, as well as "Thames Tug" (Although i'll check again to make sure ) and other area's. I have the plans for the original vessel here, and information on what she actually did. Just going to try and find the information now. I'll post it later!

One thing I forgot to mention above, the person who built her, actually worked aboard the real vessel. Thats how he obtained information and plans, which were then given to me.

Yes, this is a nice model.
In the past i use to have the "Calypso"by billingboats.
I was also a modeller in the past,however for the moment i dont have any space in my apartment left to do this again.
Maybe in the future,i'm back on track for that.

Strange that the funnel is that of the Alexandra Towing Company of Liverpool. The original (from your picture) was a Thames tug.
She is a very nice model though and I would guess you got a bargain at that price.

Yes, It is the Alexandra Towing Company, If you look at the fire fighting platform, there is a flag on the mast which represents them. There's still things I don't know about this model, and the real thing, although i'm going to try and find out as much information as I can. I'll ask Fred tomorrow when I see him, as he worked aboard her Maybe I misunderstood some of what was said.

Yes, Fred is a very experienced builder, he's been making models ever since he was a child. Well, started out making models in his childhood. He made another one this year, a schooner. I have a picture of her here:



He also built this other 3 masted schooner, she is massive, much taller (from keel to top of mast) than an average sized man. She is taller than my father. And very long too. I have to watch where i'm going with my tugs, since, power must give way to sail hehe



I forgot to mention, It took him roughly a year to complete Hibernia. He also built her sistership.

i love boats and i've been wanting a good R/C boat for a while, i've had 2 and both of them water got into the battery/motor area and they both simply stopped working. I've been quite annoyed, and haven't been able to find a nice boat yet. Anyone know a good place to get one. Online preferably, only problem is i only have my pool to run boats in, i need a bigger place

Thats a Shame, well, To be honest, I don't know what the market in America is like For Model Boating. But, If you ever come to England, it might be an idea to go to some of the boating clubs, say for example, Fleetwood Model Yacht & Power Boat Club. You won't be able to find much online, If you are willing to put a kit together, then yes, but even so, its still very costly. I got a good deal on Hibernia, Some kits can cost £300 upwards, whereas I got Hibernia for £400 in full working order and ready to run, with a top quality Remote/Radio.

Like I said, I don't know what the market is like over there for Model Boating. I would assume you have boating clubs too? Try searching on the internet for "Model Boating Clubs America" or something like that, maybe you'll come up with results, there are always people looking to sell boats. But just be careful, its very easy to disguise bad workmanship in a model. If you want any more help, just ask

Like here they sail the boats in a local pond(small lake),or when they go a bit further,they go to Antwerp(left side).K.M.Y.C.A.(antwerp model boat club) runs there a special place,to sail the vessels.
If i'm free,i send you some pics from there,in spring,than the guy's coming back to sail the vessels.

I'm possibly giving away my age here, but I don't recall seeing any Alexandra tugs on the Thames, but it's many moons ago that I am recalling. Mind you it was always "Sun" tugs that Harrison Line ships used. See picture below.

Found out some information about Hibernia, it appears she was in more than one company, that is why she was seen in different places. I have a picture here of her. (Middle)

More research: It appears she is in Greece, and has a new name Looks like they played around with the colour of her wheelhouse, too
