Thinking about getting a new computer?
« on: October 02, 2008, 18:57:52 »

Hi everyone,

I was thinking about getting a new computer soon. This one is 3 years old now, and its sort of getting to its limit as to how much I can upgrade it.

I'd like to be able to get a high performance one, that will run Ship Simulator (and future versions) with ease. And good quality graphics.

For example, DVO Marine Design (Dom) created the S.S. France, I can run it quite well on low quality settings, but when I zoom out, it goes all jaggy and not even. Here's a picture of what I mean:

Now, if I compare that to Dom's screen shots of in game play, look at the difference:

(Make the picture's bigger so you can see the quality difference, by putting the URLS into your web browser)

Its also the same with vessel's in Ship Simulator, when I zoom out, the quality gets worse.

Can anyone suggest what I should do? Should I upgrade this PC further, or move on, and purchase a high performance PC that will run the likes of S.S. France with ease, and future versions of Ship Simulator. I'd be willing to pay that extra cash now for a great computer that will play future games well.

Can anyone reccommend what I should/could do? If you think I should get a new computer that has great performance, Could you give me some examples? its just, I don't know much about computers as such, so i'd like some professional advice.

Thanks in advance.
Jack.

I have never liked upgrading, since most of the time the computer can't handle the upgrades. I would get a new computer, I can't help much since I am from the US and all I would suggest is HP or Dell.

I can say HP & Dell are both good PC's, Dell has better laptops. Just stay away from Gateway, I had one as my first laptop, the AC adapter inside the machine broke like every month, and it starts every month after a year, right when the warranty is up. But once again, not sure what you guys have over across the pond.

Yes but they are expensive and made for looks and gaming. They are a bit to spendy. They look Spambot though.

I had the same problem sometime ago.

PC company said that it would be cheaper to get a new comp.

Old one would need new fan and tower made bigger or something...

So here I am with what was a spanking new PC! :D

Well I think they are cheap, if the prices the display on the webside apply, but anyway if you bought one, it would cost a lot to get to the right country I guess

Went for a Dell myself - tried online but couldn't get the spec I wanted exactly - spoke to them and ended up with a semi-business pc (Vostro 400) for just less than the same home user price. Does the job for me  8)

You can customize your computers anyway you want online from the dell website.

Not quite (in the UK anyway), online you are limited to choose certain options - I had a spec in mind but couldn't get the nVidia graphics card I wanted with it - that's why they suggested the business spec pc for home use.

I just say: build it!

- Get yourself a huge computer tower where you at least have space for your hands and tools you will need.
- Get yourself a high-end graphic card
- if you want more than 3 GB of memory use Vista 64-bit and you can go for 8 GB if you want

At least you don't have to change tower all the time. You just replace the old parts with the new when you want to upgrade. All it requires is some knowledge about hardware and how to add hardware to the motherboard, connect cables, what power supply (PSU) you need, fans/ type of cooling, install drivers...stuff like that. You don't need a master in computer science to do that :D

If you go for a high-end system this time it wont cost you as much next time when you maybe only want to replace your graphic card with a better one. It's very easy too upgrade and you can have more fans or better cooling and customize it after your own needs ;)
