QE2 retiring
« on: June 15, 2008, 12:50:55 »

Did you hear about the Queen Elizabeth 2 retiring? Here's a small news report:

LONDON - Queen Elizabeth II has made a farewell visit to Queen Elizabeth 2, the famed cruise liner which is retiring later this year.

The monarch launched the ship in Scotland in 1969, and she was in Southampton on Monday for a last tour.

The ship is due to make its last voyage in November when it sails to Dubai to become a floating hotel.

The visit coincided with the 55th anniversary of the queen's accession to the throne following the death of her father, King George VI.

Can you believe that it's going to be a stupid hotel?!

Everything in life has an expiry date, ships included.

There comes a time when updates in safety regulations such as SOLAS makes it impossible to keep a ship at sea any longer.

- QE2 to be sold to Dubai World in November 2008
The QE2 will be delivered to Dubai World in November 2008, where she will cease her role as an ocean-going passenger vessel and be refurbished and adapted for her new home. From 2009, the vessel will be berthed at a specially-constructed pier at The Palm Jumeirah, the worlds largest man-made island, to create a luxury floating hotel, retail and entertainment destination.

i got this off of qe2 webste

It is a real shame.... but like someone said above everything has an expiry date.  Take a look at these facts.... simply unbeliveable.

The QE2 has:
- Sailed 5.5 million nautical miles - that's more than any other ship ever, and the equivalent of travelling to the moon and back 13 times
- Carried almost 2.1 million guests
- Completed 24 Full World Cruises

QE2 is:
- The fastest merchant ship in operation - QE2 can go faster backwards than most cruise ships can go forwards!
- Much loved - An estimated one million people turned out to see her when she called at Liverpool for the first time in 1990

The QE2's records probbably will never be broken and her huge reign spanning forty years including a spell as a troop ship during teh falklands war makes her unforgetable.  As for her final resting place, Dubai is a much better destination tean teh scrapyard or seabed.  Dubai has paid huge sums of money to prise her from cunard and i have no doubt they will look after her!  A small consilation, Cunard are already planning a replacement, The Queen Elizabeth.  How you can name a new ship after a retired one i have no idea but thats a completly different debate.
