is my computer too weak?
« on: March 20, 2008, 02:12:02 »

My computer runs Ship Simulator 2006 just fine, but my family is worried that the 512 MB of RAM that it has isn't enough to run Ship Simulator 2008. Is it, or did they misinterpret "1GB of memory" to mean "1GB of RAM"?

Hi Gigantic,

No they read that just right..

1Gb of memory indeed means 1GB of RAM.  so 512 is indeed only half of what you would need. IF you run xp. And if you run Vista, you will need 2GB.

How's the rest of the machine doing? is it up to specs for processor and graphics card and so on?

Regards,
Fred

I have XP, and yes, everything else is just fine!

If I have too little memory, why does SS06 okay?

Well, obviously SS06 is an older game.. and SS08 is just more demanding. It needs a better pc to run fine.

This is the case with most new version of an exsisting game out there. Pretty normal really.  :)

But the page says SS06 needs 1GB of memory... so how can the game run on 512 MB?

Well sometimes below spec machines CAN run things, if the circumstances are ok. So if the rest of the pc is really good, for example.. But it's usually not the case.

But there will probably be some weird things going on sometimes..

Do you have the Addon btw?  Cause that's probably why it says 1GB now.. the original SS06 needed 512MB.
But with the patches or the addon, the game just got more demanding.

I guess it's the addon then that made VSTEP change the specs on the website.

On the SS06 box it says 512MB, on the Addon 1GB.

But the SS06 Addon is for SS06, and so to make sure people can run SS06 with all the possible content, they changed the specs so that the Addon can be run too. That's what I think, anyway.

Makes sense, or you would be dissapointed if you buy SS06 AND the Addon and can't run the addon properly because you thought 512MB would suffice.

Yes, but as the Addon can be seen as SS06 content, they probably changed the SS06 specs too, to make sure ALL the SS06 content could run on a player's computer... As I just explained.. hehe.

So if it would still say 512MB, and you would check out the SS06 page, and think "oh I can run it, I have 512MB!" and you would not notice the different specs on the Addon and order that along with it, and find that you got major problems wit the addon content, then you'd be really dissapointed..

So that's probably why they made both lists of specs the same.. To prevent such things.
