Yes it ends up in Virtual Sailor and that's a little bit funny.
It's posted here and ends up in VS :D

Maybe something to think about VSTEP...

Although the models made in Sketch Up don't fair so well in the conversion from .3ds to .x though. :P

Maybe Deep Exploration can do it better?
http://www.righthemisphere.com/products/dexp/de_std.html (http://www.righthemisphere.com/products/dexp/de_std.html)

There is a trial version there. Use it to convert 3ds to X.
I don't have "ketshup" myself so I don't know if DeepEx can make a better result :)

IF ketshup can convert to OBJ-file I would use OBJ file instead because it keeps the data a lot better than 3DS.

I don't think the forum hates VS, but they are a rivalling game, so they just don't want to talk about it.
But we have way to many offtopic topics about it, whick is a sad thing

its a shame that all ship simulator modelers have there ships go to vs when with some work they could be put into this game

That's what I'm exactly saying. I don't know how many times I have been saying that, but I already started with this when the first version of this Ship Simulator forum was born and I was a part of the moderators at that time... But now when they have opened a some kind of add-on shop selling SS boats I guess that they would sell even more of them IF they made some kind of "test environment" where at least the developer CUD test his boat model just to be sure that everything is OK before he get in contact with VSTEP saying "vola, my boat have been tested and is ready to be sold and placed into SS".

It's completely stupid that VS is the place where we test our new developed boats. If VSTEP made a limited "light version" of SS (some kind of DEMO version) with only one small environment + converting tools to convert files from one file format to another and a very detailed guide made as a PDF file (Adobe Acrobat Reader) and released this as "developers pack" or "SDK pack" I mean that the interest for making new add-ons for Ship Simulator would become more interesting...

If VSTEP also did make a movie channel or something where they did publish tutorial videos for 3ds Max for examle like "How to make a small boat in 3ds Max", or "How to make a small boat in Sketchup" it would just help newbies and add-on developers a lot. Today we are actually just saying: "Pal, find it out yourself...Google it". If this doesn't sound interesting then call me a chicken..!!! :D

Just to add to that.. The problem is that Sketchup models are just not suited for this game.
So all "our" vessel development, which is 95% sketchup work, is not really development for this game at all, but just people making ships with Sketchup. No disrespect, because there are very talented people out there, they just use the wrong program, unfortunatly.

So people that use Sketchup, are really not "ship simulator modelers" but "VS modelers" as it is clear from the start that they will only be able to use their model for that game, not SS08. It has been said on many many occasions, Sketchup will not do.. simple as that.

A pity, but that's just how it is. If they were to use the proper software, it would be an alltogether different story. People that make good models, with the right software, and make ships that are feasable for SS08 do have a chance to get their ships in the game, as VSTEP is eager to check them out and if it's a keeper, they will work together with the creator to add the vessel to the game.

But no sketchup model will ever be in SS8. And since 3ds max is about $3500, not many people would buy it. I'm not sure if GMAX (3ds max 'light') would do too, but I have a feeling it might. Though these programs are of course a lot more difficult than Sketchup.

Thus, I don't see enough 'proper' models to justify VSTEP creating a 'test environment'.
And the people that do make SS08 suited models, allready have the tools for the job, they don't need such a system anyway.

And those hardcore tools allready come with plenty of documentation, and there are websites and forums full of tutorials and lessons at everyone's fingertips, no need for some video tutorials, really. Google really IS the best option here, I must say. Why re-write something if there is a ton of info available allready? It only costs time and money, and VSTEP is not responsible for learning people how to model, so why should théy spend time on it whilst newbie developers can just google and find more than enough on the subject?

That's how I see it anyway

Regards,
Fred
