Why are there so few add-ons for Ship Simulator?
« on: September 16, 2013, 20:53:13 »

I know there are probably threads alluding to this, but I want to ask the question on a new thread. Why two to three years on from this game being released are there still so few add-ons? I come from the world of train simulator which has added such variety and quality of downloads over the years. I know that flight simulators are similar. Why has the Ship Simulator series been so disappointing in this respect?

I particularly like ferries, but was rather disappointed with the Ferry Pack DLC which only included one ship that I was interested in (the catamaran). I know it's about personal taste and I like British stuff rather than American, but there was still no purpose built ferry to run on Dover-Calais. Pride of Rotterdam ad nauseum - no thanks! And still no Stena Line ferry to run into the Hook of Holland. How many years now have we been waiting? Come on VSTEP - listen to your fans!

What I'd love to see in the game (and surely it can't be that difficult) are add-ons like this. Perhaps a Brittany Ferries add-on which gives you representations of the ferries and then a few of the ports like Ouistreham, St. Malo or Roscoff modelled. If train and flight simulators can do this with add-ons then why not for ships? I'd pay good money for something like that and it would fit perfectly with Portsmouth already in the game.

And why is freeware not possible to put in the game? That gimmicky competition where one creation was chosen was annoying - why did they not put all the entries into the game rather than picking one?

I don't get VSTEP - they could make a mint from this series with quality add-ons and when you look at the success of flight simulator and the railworks series, it is frustrating that Ship Simulator is so far behind. I'll stick with trains for now I think.

Hi
VSTEP have tried to get support for the external companies for advertising, but this has more or less failed. The problem is to develop a 3D ship, it's very expensive. Also the software the game reads costs around £1000 a licence! It could be possible to "crack" the code on making your own models, but their been no luck yet!
Ship simulator needs to make more money to make more add ins. The environmental CCC was cancelled as it costs too much.
Also many senior members of this fourm have pointed to VSTEP are no longer working on the ship simulator series (I mean their not going to overhaul it).
We may see some changes in the future but this is the current situation

Perhaps a Kickstarter for the next project would help. We'll never know :(
