ATI 6970 and SSE ? (crash at initializing)
« on: April 13, 2013, 15:43:33 »

Hello everyone,

After years being off of games and from this forum, I just bought SSE today (retail version).

My question is about my system (see signature for details) and specifically my VGA, will it be able to handle SSE ? Any guidance regarding settings will be appreciated, I'm already running the latest Catalyst drivers (13.1).

Cheers,

Nikos

P.S: from what i've read so far in the forums, it is not recommended to install/play SS2008 under Windows 7 eh ? I'm wondering cause I still own SS2008.

Hey Nikos,
SS2008 works fine on Win7.
It runs with a solid 60 FPS on my computer which also is a Win7 one.

Just for the organized look, can you give me your DxDiag?
Here's how to make one:

You will need to register your SSE license key first in order to view it.

Ok i just registered my SSE (still haven';t even installed it though :) ), and here's the DxDiag Mr Robville.

Eagerly waiting for your advise.

P.S: I am reading in other forum threads that the latest ATI drivers (13.1) might be not working with SSE, should i get the newest beta drivers maybe ?

Ok I managed to resolve this one by uninstalling 13.1 drivers and installing the latest 13.3 beta 3 from ATI.

As for the rest Mr. Robville, could you please check my DxDiag and crash report  and maybe give me a hint ?

Most importantly, I would appreciate any guidance regarding installing, configuring and running SS2008 on my system too. I went ahead and downloaded the game again yesterday, do I need any patches ? anything I should take special note or care about installing and running it under Win 7 ?

Thanks in advance.

P.S: new DxDiag after driver update attached.

Your DxD shows your computer does indeed perfom without a problem hardware wise.
I'm glad you got SSE to work so fast!

For SS2008, Just install the game itself first. Then apply it's patches from www.shipsim.com.
If you want to add more content like the expansion pack or Jumbo Javelin it could sometimes do good to load the game first, enter the serial, and exit it before installing further.  ;)

I have encountered problems regarding SS2008, at first i couldn't run it at all, but i followed the steps below and now it's running fine (I'm posting them just in case other fellow members find the info useful to overcome their problems):

- First I installed CFF Explorer and I edited both Questviewer.exe and SS208.exe so each can handle more than 2GB of ram. This step helped overall with performance and general "feel" of how the game runs.

- I then had a problem with the game crashing (crash gave an error message about questviewer had crashed) while I attempted to change resolution via the ingame Graphics settings. I could only have the game run at the default 1024x768 but whenever i tried to change it, it would crash. After lots of fidling around, I managed to change teh resolution to my (and my monitors) liking, that is 1920x1080x32. I did this by going to: "C:\Users\XXXXXX\Documents\ShipSim2008 UserData" folder and i manually edited the config.xml file (where XXXXXX is your user's name). I opened it up with Notepad and at the top of the list i manually replaced 1024x768x32 with 1920x1080x32.
After this little mod, the game runs fine so far (only played a couple of missions) and with all GFX settings maxed out.

Hope the above might help others as i said.

Now if i may, can you tell me which is the latest version/build for SS2008 ? I'm asking cause i installed it and i see "version 1.4.2 build 1038", is this the latest one or should i patch it ? And if i do, could you give a link to the patches ?

Thanks again for your time and help Mr Robville, appreciate your input :)
