I'm told there are only 2 or 3 manufacturing companies anyway and that the are all 'badge' jobs. Is that true?

That depends on who you talk to Stu in all honesty.  I've heard similar stories myself, but how do we (the average user) confirm or deny these stories eh :-\

I guess it's like most products, remove your logo/packaging, sell the cheaper option to someone else, and STILL make a decent profit ;)

I have worked for a company who did it the otherway around. That company ordered(made) their own stuff, however it was called a real Belgian product. It was accualy made in china. So if some containers came to our warehouse,we had to remove the boxes(were it was printed'made in china").to put the in the company's boxes.
Still now, when i go into a shop, they sell it like a real Belgian product. It's a trade marked well knowned around the world. You would be surprice which this is.
Marc
However,it is realy a very good quality-product.

I had to laugh at a story that I was told a few years back (probably not actually real, but made me chuckle)

Back when microchips were first really being used commercially en masse, a British company ordered X thousand chips from a Japanese company, with Y% tolerance of failure.

The Japanese apparently sent 2 consignments- one with 100% working chips and the other with a box of broken chips, as per the requirements of the requirement. Along with it they sent a note "Why do you want broken chips?".

The point the Japanese were making was that whilst we expected a % failure, they did not and only accepted 100%. How true it is, I don't know. But I could just imagine it happening.
