Hey

I was wondering, what is more efficient, a "conventional" set up with propeller and rudder, or a azipod system with the combined rudder propeller?

it all depends on what vessel their installed on, and what sort of enviroment there used in. However, Azipods are more effecient (thanks to their electric propultion). They can also turn better in prettymuch every circumstance.
You'll have to wait until clanky comes along to anwser your question properly though.

Hello TFM,
The attached paper can already give a good and deep insight of the issue. This study is well detailed and the answers can be found in the text itself, without reading all details from the formulas.
There is, I think, no direct answer to your question about the efficiency, as indeed the mechanical efficiency of direct coupling and shafting is higher than what electrical transmission and propulsion can achieve.

onte thing that report didn't discuss was fuel economy (though I doubt that figures as much into the US Navy  :doh: )
