Azipod Problem On Ocean Star
« on: November 23, 2011, 16:23:49 »

Hello. I am using the Ocean Star alot now on SS08 NH. I direct the azimuth pods the right way to dock to use them as stern thrusters but my ship seems to be going forward. Help much appreciated! Thanks.!   :captain:

Have you studied this? It explains how azipods operate.

Yes. I have studied it over and over. I went on a cruise called Independence of the seas last week. That was azipod driven! (:

Can you send a picture of the problem?

Don't forget this ship drifts a lot and takes time to come to a full stop, so it can be normal that she moves foward even if the azipods are stopped/turned  ;)

The controls and the problem can't be seen. Can we meet up on a server tonight?  :captain:

How comes you can't see your control?  ??? There should be a button for that...

No SS08 for me tonight, I'm very busy with studies. I'll be online Saturday evening though!  :2thumbs:

I can understand your confusion WelshTurnip..
Strangely, when you turn the azipods 180° with forward throttle, the ship still goes forwards.
Unlike the other azipod ship (the Bugsier), the Ocean Star apparently does have a reverse..

The document posted by Angus describes how Ocean Star operated in SS2008 at the time I wrote it.
It still operates that way in the version that I have. If you have downloaded an “improved” version of OS, then good luck.

As explained, if you set one Az to 90 or 270 degrees, you can use it as a stern thruster.
If you balance it with the bowthruster, you can move OS crabwise.

With the second Az left at 180 degrees, you have control of forward movement.
You have the best control for that maneuver by using the mouse on the colored circles.

Yes, unlike Bug2, the screw rotation can be reversed on OS by moving into the red region of the controller. This makes more sense for a cruise liner.
The white triangle on the controller points in the direction that the screw faces. When it points aft, it behaves like the screw on a conventional ship: Forward (Green) rotation pushes the ship toward the pointy end.

What Marty says above is quite correct. The best way to fully understand Ocean Stars performance is to go into freeroaming with her in a confined area and experiment with the controls. As Marty points out, with this ship you can go ahead or astern without turning the azipods, but if you turn them 1800,(i.e.to 00) then going into the green area will move her astern and into the red area will move her ahead. However, as I say, the best way, in my view, is to experiment and all will be revealed.

Thanks a lot gentlemen. I had never noticed the blue, red and green zones of the controls, as I'm used to steering the ship with the keyboard. It all makes perfect sense to me now, and in future I shall be using the mouse for manoevering the ship.  :)
