Snow in Antartica?
« on: September 17, 2010, 11:12:04 »

I can't seem to find another thread on this topic and excuse me if this is a doubler ,but from what I've read on internet it doesn't snow in Antartica and as a matter of fact it's considered the world's biggest desert. The missions to Antartica have snowstorms ,sure I can live with it ,but if the snowstorm takes performance away from the gpu/cpu I'd gladly do without.Correct me if I'm wrong please.

Weigh anchor you warbly lot!

Hi Skipper,

It does snow in Antarctica: http://www.antarcticconnection.com/antarctic/science/meteorology.shtml
It's not the most performance heavy aspect of the game, so you still should be good.

Yes, it does snow there, albeit usually only about a few inches per year..

Also, the environment is not Antarctica. It is a small section of the Southern Ocean just south of the Antarctic Circle.

If you look at the radar, you will see that the latitude is only 67 degrees.

Given the wording of the promotional material, I can not understand how he got it wrong... (sarcasm, just in case you weren't sure).

I must have missed the promotional material that referred to “Antarctica” (the continent) instead of “the Antarctic” (technically anyplace south of the Antarctic circle, but sometimes broadened to include places like South Georgia).

I always just assumed that  the two were essentially the same...

Having personally been to the Antarctic circle and in  real area I can confirm it does snow there. At this latitude the snow and spray from the sea also freeze and become ice on the superstructure. May be something like this can be modelled in the sim. Although this might mean a few people showing anitfouling paint towards the sky, those that play for hours on end down there!
Cheers
