Think of the web server as a submarine, sending out a pulse of sound (or in this case data). This is recieved by your computer, and it tells your computer to send it back. So it does. Meanwhile, the web server is timing the whole event, from the time it sends the pulse, to the time it recieves it. The difference is the 'ping'

Ping is actually derived from sonar, referring to the time it takes for the sound from the sonar to reflect off the enemy's hull and return.

For a more techy explanation, see here. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ping)

Make sense - they do the same thing with satellites - called ranging then...

what is ping?
Ping is a hard disk cloning software, designed to run off live. It's based off of the Linux kernel and it's name is an acronym of "Partition Image is Not Ghost", a bit of a play on "Norton Ghost".

Kidding..

Well, not kidding, it's true, but I know what you meant.

Wow guys, my internet speed is so much faster, I don't know HOW ON EARTH you guys live with such a slow connection, I would die if I had that.. :D
