Does anyone know what could be causing ths to happen, just today I tried to play some music on my computer (Windows XP) and the notice pictured below came up, I followed instructions (internet/broadband connection was turned of at the time), when I clicket verify a notice in the same panel came up and told me this may be a faulse version of WMP 11 and now every time I go onto WMP the same notice keeps coming up. I have tried to contact Windows/Microsoft UK but have gotten nowwhere.

You may have noticed how their bragging on about how simple and strait-forward this new Windows 7 is supposed to be, why can't their website be the same. Does anyone AT ALL know what might be wrong, I have run a full virus check on my computer using the latest version of Avast but it has come up with nothing.

I'm not fantastic at computers...But Sometimes one Anti-Virus mightn't pick up something, whereas another one might...I've found, anyway.

Have you tried scanning with Windows Defender as well?

Oh thats easy...you just need to make sure your using a legit (Legal) version of windows and not an Illegal (Pirated) Version.....Then you can download it

This is similar to what happened on my old laptop. The original HP discs were damaged, so I installed windoze from a normal retail pack, but using the PROPER registration key for my laptop (so I was still using a licensed version). It did install properly, but every time I tried to update, MicroMush sent Gill Bates to my computer to warn me about piracy, just as you are experiencing.

So, I can tell anyone you don't need to be a cut throat pirate of the computer to get this.

The thing is is that i've never tried installing other versions or updates of Windows Media Player, Plus I seem to remember my aunt had the same problem a few months back (as this is actually her computer and she just lets me use it), I'm pretty sure she back dated the system by about two weeks or so and seemed to fix it, but I don't know how to back date the system.

Have you tried clicking on the Validate button with Internet access turned on?

If there were any recent changes to the hardware, validation might fail.

By “Back date” I think you mean System Restore. Best you let your Aunt do that, if it is her computer.

Go to the Windows Start button, click it and select "help".

Type "Restore" into the search function.

That should tell you what to do to roll back to a previous restore point.

Whilst I was using an illegal version of Windows XP (not my fault) I managed to validate my Windows Media Player with the internet switched off, it would never let me do it whilst the internet was switched on as it would tell me that Windows was an illegal copy and try forcing me to buy a legal one.

More to the point though, try reinstalling the program and then try validating it, that might fix any issues the program has with itself.

And for the record, my current copy of windows is completely legal, I just wish it wasn't Vista now.

Hi Graeme,
As Marty has said, all you have to do is click 'validate' with the internet turned on.
This has probable popped up now because your aunt did a system restore to a previous date and the system has caught up again, (there is sometimes a popup when you first download and install software that will give you the option to validate at a later date, this option was probable chosen at install).
