Will SS10 be 64 bit?
« on: October 05, 2009, 03:37:53 »

Since MS says for hardware to qualify for the Windows 7 sticker it must run all versions of 7 that includes 64bit versions. Looks like 32 bit is going the way of the dodo bird.

So what tests have Microsoft set for Windows 7 compatibility? The software giant states that any machine carrying the sticker will have to "work with all versions of Windows 7". That includes the 64-bit versions of the operating system, which Microsoft claims "is an important change since 64-bit systems are becoming more mainstream".

If the game supports latest DirectX version I don't see the big difference in how a 64-bit system will make a difference. The only thing here is this stupid memory limit that you got in Vista 32-bit. I really don't like this limit at all since motherboards today supports up to 8 GB of RAM or even more.

So if you are going to feel "the power" of these 8 GB of RAM well then you need to upgrade to a 64-bit OS.
And that would also mean that the game (ship simulator) would be able to use that amount of memory including the GPU memory if the game is designed to do so.

Anyway it's good news if MS want to base their new OS on 64-bit. Then hopefully all other software/hardware companies will follow since it's a pain to find 64-bit hardware drivers today or to get 64-bit version of software....especially computer games. :)

In every 32 bit version of a operating system you will have a limit of 3gb working RAM ;)

Yep, the law of mathematics says so. 232 is the maximum number of bits of informtion that your system can physically access.

Simple description:
If you have a single light bulb it can have only 2 states (on or off). That's 21.

If you have 2 light bulbs, they can have four different states -
off-off
on-off
off-on
on-on
That's 22.

If you have 3 light bulbs, you can have 8 different states (you can figure them out yourself).
That's 23.

If you have 8 light bulbs, you can have 256 different states (you can figure them out yourself).
That's 28. And so on.

When you get to 32 light bulbs, you get 232. That's 4,294,967,296, which is 4Gig.

On your PC, 32 bits means that the software can control up to 32 sets of wires that can access the memory. The PC can therefore read or write a single piece of information (a "bit") at 232 locations.

So you can install 8GB (Giga bytes) if you wish, but your 32-bit software can't access it all. But a 64-bit system can access a whole load more. (Try working out 264 - that's 2 x 2 x 2 x 2 x 2... 64 sets of x 2).

Hope that's a bit clearer than black, slimey mud.  ;D

All of which begs the question posed by the topic title.

First, if Extremes—or its former, optimistic, name “SS 2010”—is still based on the current 32 bit QV, it will run on a 64-bit OS—hopefully at least as well as SS 2008 does.

If VSTEP were to go to a 64-bit engine—either a 64-bit QV, or an entirely new engine—they need to ask how many potential customers are locked into 32-bit hardware.

The customer potential of 32bit - 64bit is about 90% vs 10%.
Not knowing the software they're using but making both 32 and 64 versions shouldn't be a big problem. Only possible stepping stone could be the Quest3d and it's capabilities.
The basic fact is that Windows 7 does have Windows XP-mode which will run any 32bit software.
