Yes that is a good idea, as forumotion forums are equiped with a chatbox I dont know about smf, I use smfforfree so the paid version could be different, also we have allot of members so it would be hard to communicate I think but its worth the shot

As I said before when such a suggestion was made - plugins for SMF most likely brings alot of errors. Some you wouldn't notice unless you take a peep in the error log.
But errors are errors and admins try and avoid them as best as they can.

Nice suggestion though, but I think there might be too much posters on the forum that it would have a overload.. ;D
And people can't keep up with the random conversations...

Hi guys,

The introduction of a chat function has been requested quite a few times before, and as I recall, it was not a feasable idea for this forum, unfortunatly.  :-\

100% agreement from me, Fred!

If I understand correctly, this proposed system would be parasitical on the forum bandwidth. On that basis, I think it would be technically unfeasible.

I think that there are enough other PM systems around that people can use already, so probably not a great loss..

There's almost 40 000 registered members, only ~ 2500 has made 1 & more posts on forum! You think it could be overloaded/overmembered/oversailed/overcaptained/overpeopled ?
Yes - actually.

If you notice shoutboxes on very active sites like this forum, you'd notice that you get lots of new posts each time you load the shoutbox. Which makes it hard to keep with the conversation..
Try for example, a MSN conversation with 50 odd people. I have trouble talking to more than 10 people in a MSN conversation.. It just would be a mess..

Plus, with 50 odd members refreshing the shoutbox every second or two, the bandwidth needed would be large.

^^^^As Terry said. ;D

Cheers!

Of course, we also have to remember that this is not a random gaming forum, but an official forum of a software developer. This forum has to run a much tighter ship than some standalone gamefan forum. This is not just about random fans, but about customers. So even if it were to be technically feasible, which it isn't, a shoutbox would - indeed to keep it suited for all ages - need to be moderated aswell. And people that break the rules need to be handled aswell. And that's virtually impossible.  :P
