I saw the new Star Trek movie today guys and let me tell you, it was absolutely AMAZING to say the least. Have any of you guys seen it? What do you think of it?

I am a real Trekkie and will get most upset if anyone spoils my enjoyment of the film once it arrives here (the UK often lags by a couple of weeks behind the US release dates, due to school holidays being different).

Ok I will not tell you. All I will say is that I thought it was fantastic and should have gotten a 6 stars. ^{It probably did now that I think of it.}

lol...you seem to have an interest in astronomy. Is that true?

Having a PhD in Astrophysics, living a very short distance from "Uncle Pat" and having my own observatory in the back garden, you might get that impression.

I was introduced to astronomy at a very young age by my Gran who taught me the Arabic names of the key stars in most constellations (they all have Arabic names, actually. Those were in my post above). She also showed me that you could see some stars changing in brightness over a week or two (look at some of the stars in the Plough - Big Dipper in American).

My Mum also taught me a lot about observational astronomy (she had a set of good field telescopes). My Dad taught me about using stars as navigational aids.

One of the very good things about living here is that there are no significant  lights to the west, south or east, as it is open sea. On a clear night, the views from the beach can be stupendous.

Terry, the film's been out here for just over a month now! I too am a massive Trekkie, have been for since I was 3 apparently. I however was raised on TNG and DS9 (can recognise any episode of them within 30 seconds, just to give some perspective!), although I love TOS (not so keen on Voyager and Enterprise). Anyway, the new film (no spoilers).

Good in places, lots of action. However I found it totally senseless in others. I also found it very 'American'. One of the reasons that I've always loved Trek, and felt so passionate towards it, was because it was anything but 'American'. That's not to say I'm against the USA, but I'm sure you'll understand what I mean.
I'm now a fan of the new Enterprise (on the outside atleast!), as some of the shots of it in the film are breathtaking. There's some moments in the film that made me smile and think to myself 'yep, this is Star Trek'. But the overall feeling I left with at the end was with disappointment. Now having seen it twice since, both in iMax, I've come around to it a bit. The first 15 minutes are amazing, and I'll credit the last 10 minutes as being great if I'm honest. Overall though, if I had to sum it up from the point of view of a 'TNG' Trekkie (why can't we all just be one and the same?!):

"It's Trek Terry, but not as we know it."

Yes, I know it's been out here for a while. It's just that I've been trekking myself and every country I go to has either not got it yet, or has already had it... I'm hoping to catch up with it when I get back from Rotterdam next week, before I go off the Sweden.
