Graphics Cards - Which one to get
« on: May 16, 2009, 11:16:29 »

Hi guys,

Just in the process of building a new computer for a customer and just need a couple of opinions. I've got the rest of the computer sorted, but I'm a bit out dated on recent graphics cards.

So my question to you is, which graphics card perform best at the moment? I'm looking for NVidia cards bu which series are best? GeForce 8 series, 9 series or the GTX 200 ranges?

Many thanks in advance,
Adam

I'm in the same frame of mind, Adam..I think my next graca will be something in the gtx 200 series ..
(depending on the specs of Shipsim 2010.. )

At the moment I use a 8800GT, which works fine..
I also wonder if my CPU (Pentium 4, 3 Ghz)  will be up to speed..)   ;)

Hi Saltydog,

I too have been looking at the GTX range, very cheap card and some great clock speeds.

Just need some opinions on which range is best at the moment :)

Whichever one you get, make sure that it doesn't "share" memory with your PC.

Time after time we've found that an otherwise wonderful card cripples Ship Simulator by stealing RAM from the PC. Cards with their own exclusive memory do cost more.

Yes I only buy the cards with dedicated memory but I wondered which series perform best at this moment in time. Is it still best to buy the famous 8800GT cards or are the new 9 series and GX Series now better?

Just trying to find the best card at the moment that will last at least a year without the need to upgrade....

They are all out of date before the postman delivers them, it seems...

I wouldn't, to be honest. My 8800 GTX and 8600 GT cards work as well as any of the newer ones.

They are now quite a bit cheaper, because everyone seems dazzled by "new". But I suspect that as with CPUs in PCs, they may now be about as fast as they can be using current technology.

So you think perhaps getting a 8800 gt or gtx is as good as buying the new 9 series ect...?

I haven't yet found anything they can't handle. Of course, it may be that the card or games companies may deliberately cripple the drivers or set the requiremens artificially high, to force people to buy a newer card....
