Here is how to make a very nice bow on Sketchup

ATTENTION: This is what I call a colour in Sketchup. The different "sections" that are to be filled in with a different colour. More of that later.

1.Hull
Draw a line on the red axis. Then, find its midpoint and create a line on the green axis. Then, create a curve with the arc tool starting from either end of the line you first drew to the end of the line which you drew on the midpoint. this curve should be faceing out slightly into the green axis. The curve should now become a face. If It doesn't, retry or post here.

2. Completion of 2D Hull
click on the arc face, and then copy it. Paste it. When the whole pasted curve is highlighted (it should look identical to the other arc, obviously) right click and click flip along, and then click green direction so it becomes opposite to the curve you already have. Put this curve so that it touches the tip of the hull and the red line. Delete the line betweemn the two curves

3. 3Ding
Use the push pull tool to make the hull 3D. This is entirely up to you, you can make it as short as long as you like. Its your ship. But remeber, this isnt the whole bow, its just a colour. Then select the move tool and select pull out the tip of the hull towards the green axis. Again its up to you how tilted/sharp you want the bow.

4. Now its entirely up to you how tall you want the bow, how sharp and how many colours you want. (like many ships use red, white, orange and black) If you have a main colour like many ships (titanic, QE2 Lapland, QM2 Lusitania) have black, make that black divided into two. This makes the curve more realistic. But before you finish, please read tip 5 for tips on how to make the top of the bow.

5. optional step
ENTIRELY OPTIONAL, BUT RECOMMENDED. As many ships have fences on top of the bow these days (so you dont fall off ;D) you can follow the steps below:

create two lines so both starts from each end of the red axis line and finished at the tip.

5.b Now extend these lines like you did with the other ones. Don't forget to use the move tool and extend the tip. ;) If you get a diagonal line on the strait face then dont worry.

5.c delete the lines which you drew now have been extended. So you are left with an empty pit ;D. Delete the extra lines which have come while you were extending the tip. Delete all useless lines until you are happy with what is supposed to look a bit like this: :P

5.d Now simple redraw a line to make a floor instead of a bottomless pit :D draw a line like the first one you ever did. and at the same place (push pulled) the arrow showes what I have just explained (or tried to explain-and had a very bad attempt at it  ::))

You should finally have an end to the bottmless pit ;D

6. More "shippy" effect
Select the move tool. Go to your differet colour part and find out were the blue dotted line is. Now with the move tool, select the line above the colour and push back the colour.

This should make this sort of effect:

Looks disgusting. Isn't when you do it to all your colours. Repeat 6. for all coliurs includeing the other sides colours.

You should get something like this:

7. The plimsoll line ;D

On the bottom colour (ideally the red part) create short lines which end at endpoints and start at the tip of the hull you sharpened.

When you make a line, it will eventually come to a point when the curser becomes a red "on edge" curser. End the line here, so that the lines don't have dark profiles.

Ships have a pimsoll line at only one side.

8.Copyright! (C)

You need a name to your ship! so click on the 3D Text tool. Choose your font. If the "extend" marker is on, TURN IT OFF. You have to experiment with size Im affraid, I cant tell you what size of your letters should be.

You choice were you want the name...

9. Colour the colours! :D
Now its time to give your ship the sea! Colour the vessel in any way you want! (make sure to colour in the name too!)

10Contest!!
Now its your turn to show me how good I am as a teacher! Send me pics of either two  o of the options below and Ill see which one is the best!

1. Complete the ship Nice Bow useing the bow I made (attached below) To test your own additional Sketchup Skills
2. Make your own hull

Waiting for pics!

If you have any queries just post em or Pm em.

looks good, but how to model the bottom?  ;)
ships don't have a flat surface on the bottom, and making a bulb would interest people too  ;)

anyway, very good tutorial!  ;D
