"Stena Danica" First try
« on: July 20, 2007, 18:37:25 »

Hi!

I've only done some easier and not so detailed models before of various things, but now I thought I would have a go at a ship, and some time in the future meant to be playable in Ship Simulator (if the option to put your own ships in the game arrives).

This is not an exact replica of the "Stena Danica" (trafficking the route between Göteborg, Sweden and Fredrikshavn, Denmark), I only used the ship as a reference model for my own ship... Info: http://www.skip-siden.com/Stena%20Danica/Stena%20Danica.htm

I use Cinema 4D (www.maxon.net) when I work on this model.

The question is, should I continue to work on it or am I way out of my league? (I'm not that good at 3d)
Look at the pictures and judge for your self... but remember that this is a WORK IN PROGRESS

Updated pictures can be found further down the page... removed the first set of pictures since they are out of date.

EDIT: Info about the vessel
Length: 155 m
Width: 28.5 m
Depth: 6.3 m
Engine: Fire CCM-Sulzer 12ZV40
Power: 34 800 HP
Speed: 20 knots
Weight: 28 727 Tons
Passenger capacity: 2 274
Vehicles capacity: 555
Built: 1983 Rebuilt 1995 and 2003

I think it's great! JHB's and Goax75's models all start like this.
(Goax and JHb are top modellers)

Well done!

I really love that ferry - and I'm a frequent user! Am I right, that we have seen her sister vessel (PRIDE OF TELEMARK, ex STENA JUTLANDICA) allready in combination with VS?

BTW.: the ferries ducktail on your sketches is propably too high! It should touch the water, but it seems to be above the stern doors  ;)

Nice work!

Cheers

Haha you are absolutely correct! :P A small misscalculation... I also noticed that the hull was i bit "missformed", the sides are almost completely straight all the way down to the waterline, I'm working on that now but it was a bit more tricky than I imagined :)

I'm glad you like it, considering it's my first ship :D

Considering it's your first ship, it does look impressive so far.  Good job!! :D

Small update...

I have lowered the waterline significantly and took the advice from "bottman" about the ducktail.
I also reshaped the hull so it's now more alike the Stena Danica hull and more round... I shall now begin to work on the details (windows, bridge, texturing, etc etc)

On the rendered picture you can see the waterline and on the wired model you can see everything below...

Great! You got a basic shape. Try to shape out the hull even more and continue to work on the bow.
That's just my personal advice for you since you are doing great work so far. ;)

I need some advice from the more experienced modellers here in the forum...

1. How should I make the windows? In the model or with a texture?
2. If I create all the textures with the software "Bodypaint 3D" (the same software as Cinema 4D but for texturing) which creates layers and other pretty advanced stuff, will this work when I later export the model to wathever format the game needs (probably 3DS Max) ??

Here is also a small update with a few added exterior changes...

Sorry about that! ;) Things have been going rather slow for a while now, been kind of busy :P

But these are the most recent pictures I have, there are still alot left to do. I will try to work a little bit harder and update more often in the future... only because you are a scandinavian brother J3nsen :D

It hasn't been updated since 2007, and the designer hasn't been on for over year, so I don't t5hink it will be.

Sorry

(Shame, it looked good too)
